Does Gi-Hun Die In Squid Game Season 2?

As a dedicated fan of the gripping “Squid Game”, I can’t help but feel a mix of heartache and anticipation after binge-watching Season 2. The fate of our protagonist, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), remains unclear, leaving us on the edge of our seats for Season 3.

Contains spoilers for “Squid Game” Season 2

One of the most compelling aspects of the first “Squid Game” season is the fact that anyone could die at any second. We root for many of the 456 participants of the games to somehow make it out alive, but by the end, only Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) remains. Lee teased a far darker Gi-hun going into “Squid Game” Season 2, and that’s precisely what we get: He’s a broken man haunted by the billions he earned through hundreds of people’s deaths. He practically has a death wish agreeing to go into the games once more.

But Gi-hun doesn’t receive the sweet release of death just yet.

By the end of Season 2, Gi-hun isn’t clearly deceased, yet his circumstances are far from favorable. Attempting to halt the Front Man and bring an end to the games forever, Gi-hun and his fellow rebels either succumb or are thwarted in their efforts. Among the most heartbreaking casualties is Gi-hun’s friend, Jung-bae (portrayed by Lee Seo-hwan), who meets his demise right before Gi-hun’s eyes. Although it seems undeniably likely that he has perished at this juncture, as Gi-hun mourns, the scene transitions to the credits.

The future of Gi-hun remains uncertain as we await Season 3, which has been officially confirmed. If director Hwang Dong-hyuk gets his way, this upcoming season might differ significantly from the previous ones. Ultimately, it will be the last season, leaving us to wonder if Gi-hun will survive till the end or if his time is running out.

What could the future hold for Gi-hun after Squid Game Season 2?

Season 1 of “Squid Game” almost had a very different ending, where Gi-hun got on the plane and put the games behind him. Instead, he turns back, and as we see in Season 2, he tries to take the games down so that no one else has to suffer and die because of the inherent inequalities within capitalism. That plan is easier said than done, however, as Gi-hun competes in the games once more, and naturally, hundreds more die. The “Squid Game” Season 2 finale ends on a cliffhanger, with the rebellion getting squashed.

For Gi-hun, it means he is taken captive by Lee Byung-hun, who turns out to be Hwang In-ho, the real Player 001 all along. It’s likely that In-ho will expose his true identity to Gi-hun, revealing a betrayal from someone he thought was an ally. If Gi-hun survives in Season 3 of “Squid Game,” there’s a chance he might take over as the new Front Man. This could suggest that Gi-hun understands that In-ho cannot be defeated within this system and may try to improve it from within, but ultimately realizes that it cannot be deconstructed.

In essence, Gi-hun has begun to bend his ethical standards. At first, he hoped no one would perish during the latest contests, but before a rebellion takes place, he acknowledges that some casualties are unavoidable for others to survive. As we move into Season 3, there’s a possibility he might make further sacrifices. Or perhaps, just maybe, it will all end well, with him dismantling the games and overthrowing the oppressive system that has enslaved countless individuals in debt. A hopeful thought indeed!

“Squid Game” Season 2 is now available on Netflix.
