Does Kate Lockwood Die In Netflix’s You Season 5?

In Season 4 of “You” on Netflix, the central character’s affection is focused on Kate Lockwood (played by Charlotte Richie), who reciprocates Joe Goldberg’s (Penn Badgley) feelings. By the end of the season, they get married and relocate to New York City so that Kate can inherit her father’s company following his death, which Joe orchestrates. However, a relationship without complications is rare, and despite their marriage continuing into Season 5, Kate starts to see Joe as less than admirable when he kills her uncle at her behest. Ironically, this act seems to awaken her; she now recognizes that Joe is not the knight in shining armor she thought he was.

No longer under Joe’s control, she, together with characters Nadia Farran (Amy-Leigh Hickman) from Season 4 and Marienne Bellamy (Tati Gabrielle) from Season 3, have trapped him in a glass enclosure in the cellar of his bookstore, Mooney’s. Kate was poised to shoot Joe, but he flipped the situation around. Not only did Joe manage to escape, he also disarmed Kate and shot her in the abdomen instead. To add to their troubles, Maddie Lockwood (Anna Camp) arrived and ignited the entire bookstore, making a bad situation even worse.

Despite a grim outlook, some how Kate manages to survive, and this wasn’t due to Joe or his latest companion, Bronte (Madeline Brewer). Their earlier agreement to help each other improve had disintegrated, so Kate doesn’t lament Joe’s eventual imprisonment. Instead, she revels in having emerged from the flames to reclaim her life.

How did Kate survive the fire?

We’re unsure about how Kate managed to escape the fire, all we know is that she did. She briefly reappears at the end of Season 5 finale, titled “Finale.” Here, we get a glimpse into her life post-Joe’s imprisonment. However, in Episode 9, “Trial of the Furies,” it seems like things aren’t going well for her in the bookstore.

In the story, Bronte arrives at a bookstore that has caught fire and discovers Joe and Kate unconscious next to each other. Trying to save Kate first, Bronte realizes that Kate is unresponsive due to a gunshot wound from Joe and the fire’s aftermath. Instead, Bronte helps Joe escape the burning building while leaving Kate behind. It’s remarkable that Kate survives given the circumstances, as it takes some time for the fire department and paramedics to arrive at the scene. However, we don’t know how much time elapses until we see her again in the coda or learn about her struggle for survival, so there’s a chance she might have lived – even though it seems unlikely.

Actress Charlotte Richie, who has portrayed Kate since Season 4, expressed that she could have accepted Kate’s death because, similar to Joe, her character committed some truly heinous acts. Speaking with Business Insider, she said, “I don’t typically support the idea of people dying due to their wrongdoings, but in the context of this show’s justice system, there’s a sense of redemption in Kate’s demise that would have been acceptable.” She went on to explain that Kate has done some despicable things, gotten herself into trouble, and contributed to the downfall of many others.

What did Kate do with the rest of her life?

In the finale of “You” Season 5, Bronte provides the closing remarks, focusing on those who endured Joe’s violent rule. Interestingly, Kate, last seen unconscious amidst the bookstore explosion, is revealed to be unharmed. Although she bears burn scars as a reminder of that traumatic event, Kate carries them with honor, viewing them as a symbol of her survival and penance.

Kate won’t reclaim the CEO position at her family business. Instead, it’s Teddy (Griffin Matthews), her half-brother, who steps up and transforms the company into a fully nonprofit organization, as he shares in the closing scene. Delighted by this decision, Kate finds herself drawn back to her initial passion: managing an art gallery in London. Particularly intriguing for her is Marienne, an artist whose work was impacted by Joe, but now feels safe showcasing her paintings once more.

Additionally, it is determined that Kate will have custody over Joe’s son, Henry (Frankie DeMaio). This young lad appears to be content and well-balanced, here’s hoping he avoids the pitfalls that his father encountered.
