Does Maddie Die In 9-1-1? Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Future On The Show Explained

Throughout the series “9-1-1”, Maddie Han (played by Jennifer Love Hewitt) has faced numerous hardships. From handling an abusive ex, battling postpartum depression, and almost losing her husband Howie “Chim” Han (Kenneth Choi) on their wedding day, she’s consistently shown resilience in the face of adversity. To put it simply, Maddie is a born survivor, and this quality shines through as she navigates being kidnapped by a serial killer during the current season.

As a gamer, I found myself in the shoes of Maddie, who got tangled up with Detective Amber Braeburn, portrayed by Abigail Spencer from “Suits” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” This detective, traumatized by her own abduction as a teen, has been taking innocent lives. Unfortunately, my actions led to Amber’s cover story falling apart, putting me directly in the line of fire. Despite being pregnant and with Chim, we narrowly escaped another near-death experience. However, the ordeal left me battling a severe case of PTSD.

If you’re seeking a recap on Maddie’s background, her past hardships, and the predicament she currently finds herself in, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s an overview of her character, her history of challenges, and the fresh obstacle she’s encountering.

Who is Maddie in 9-1-1?

Maddie Buckley chose to work as a 9-1-1 operator to distance herself from a tumultuous marriage. Her sibling, Evan “Buck” Buckley (played by Oliver Stark), stands by her side as she forges a new path in life; however, remnants of her past soon resurface. Abducted and close to death at the hands of her former spouse, Doug Kendall (portrayed by Brian Hallisay), who grew increasingly enraged by Maddie’s growing feelings for Chim, she is eventually saved. With Doug eliminated, Maddie allows herself to be swept off her feet by Chim, but their romance becomes entangled when they unexpectedly welcome a child, Jee-Yun, into their lives.

Maddie finds herself plunged into a harrowing bout of postnatal depression, overwhelmed by emotions of self-disgust and inadequacy. Her self-hatred intensifies after an incident where Jee-Yun nearly drowns while Maddie is watching her, leading her to believe she’s unfit to care for her own child. Convincing herself she can’t be trusted, Maddie flees to San Francisco. Eventually, she and Chim reconcile and get married, but tragedy strikes again as Chim contracts encephalitis before their wedding day. After he recovers, the couple start fresh in a new home with Jee-Yun, eagerly anticipating the arrival of another child. However, misfortune befalls them once more when…

What happened to Maddie in 9-1-1?

As someone who’s faced countless harrowing ordeals, you’d expect the cosmos to cut me some slack. Regrettably, it seems the universe has other plans – all part of fate’s capricious dance. One day, while I’m on duty at my job, a call comes in from a man teetering on the edge. To my dismay, he’s abducted a girl named Jayna. As I try to keep him engaged, we manage to trace the call, only for it to lead us to an empty lot. Before I can act further, he ends the call, leaving me in uncertainty once more.

In this scenario, Maddie and Athena are questioned by Amber Braeburn, a detective specializing in missing persons, who suspects a connection between the anonymous caller and an old case involving a murder and kidnapping that occurred ten years ago. Maddie conducts her own investigation, but Amber has already identified Richard Bullock as a possible suspect due to his past offenses. When Richard contacts them again, Maddie feigns empathy to keep him talking, hoping to save Jayna. However, Richard threatens to harm Jee-Yun instead. In an attempt to protect Jayna, Maddie manipulates Richard into taking his own life, a move that might be too extreme for some viewers but seems justified given the circumstances. When Maddie hears a gunshot, she believes Richard has killed himself. The police later find and rescue Jayna, and everything appears to be resolved.

However, that’s not what transpired. That fateful night, Maddie encountered Amber who ambushed and drugged her. Upon regaining consciousness, Maddie discovered Amber had Dissociative Identity Disorder, triggered by her own kidnapping and mistreatment during a 9-1-1 call. It was further revealed that Amber was a serial killer. Maddie soon understood she’d been speaking to one of Amber’s alternate personalities on the phone, with the deceased man at the scene serving as a scapegoat for Amber’s criminal activities. Maddie narrowly escaped becoming Amber’s next victim, with her throat slit, but Athena intervened and shot Amber dead before she could harm Jee-Yun and Chim. Despite surviving the ordeal, Maddie was left battling nightmares and a severe case of PTSD. To make matters worse, they now face a much larger issue.

Will Maddie lose Chim?

Living in the fast-paced California portrayed in “9-1-1” is seldom tranquil, so it’s no wonder that Maddie and Chim are once again faced with imminent danger. During an emergency response at a government lab, Chim was infected with a virus similar to Ebola but more contagious and lethal. By the time viewers last saw him, he was in the agonizing stages of his final hours. Maddie can only take calls from her husband and listen to his pain from afar as the team races against time to develop a cure for Chim. However, some government officials are trying to suppress this situation, making the team’s efforts even more challenging.

It doesn’t seem like Chim is going to pass away, but it certainly feels dramatic to subject this pair to additional suffering. Here’s hoping he defeats the virus with the assistance of his brave friends. However, fans must continue to wait and watch to find out if this beloved “9-1-1” duo will receive a second opportunity — or if Maddie will experience heartbreak again.
