As a fan who grew up with the zany antics of Captain Underpants and George Beard, I couldn’t be more excited for DreamWorks’ upcoming film, Dog Man! With my childhood memories still fresh, I remember eagerly awaiting each new installment of Dav Pilkey’s hilarious series. Now, seeing the beloved characters come to life on the big screen is a dream come true.
In the first teaser for DreamWorks’ upcoming film, “Dog Man,” it appears that Justice, the subject matter, enjoys chasing not only its own trail but also a few mischievous squirrels. Based on the popular children’s book series penned by author Dav Pilkey, this movie (slated for release in early 2025) is set in a world of comic book fiction that has been brought to life by the imaginative minds of the troublemaking protagonists from “Captain Underpants,” George Beard and Harold Hutchins.
In this tale presented by DreamWorks and Universal Pictures, when a dedicated police dog and his handler officer sustain injuries during their duty, an extraordinary operation binds them into one being, resulting in the creation of Dog Man. This hybrid creature is tasked with upholding law and order – along with more traditional canine commands like fetch, sit, and roll over.
In his new role as a hybrid cop, Dog Man endeavors to win over his police chief boss, played by Lil Rey Howery from “Get Out”, and outwit the wicked schemes of the notorious cat criminal, Petey the Cat, portrayed by Pete Davidson from “Saturday Night Live”. Petey, who is now orchestrating a scheme to double his trouble by cloning himself, forms an unexpected partnership with our canine hero when one of his duplicates – Lil Petey – gets captured by a mutual enemy. The story concludes that through this experience, they learn that the bond of family (and kittens!) can even bring the most hostile adversaries together.
The voice cast also features the talents of Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers, Rango) as TV reporter Sarah Hatoff; Poppy Liu (Hacks, The Afterparty) as Petey’s assistant, Butler; Emmy nominee Stephen Root (Barry, King of the Hill) as Grampa; Billy Boyd (the Lord of the Rings franchise, Seed of Chucky) as Sarah’s cameraman, Seamus; and Emmy and Golden Globe winner Ricky Gervais (The Office, Extras) as Flippy the fish.

When does Dog Man open in theaters?
Dog Man will exclusively hit theaters everywhere on January 31, 2025.
In this scenario, Peter Hastings (known for “The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants” and “Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness”) took the lead as the project director. Meanwhile, Karen Foster (renowned for “Spirit Untamed”) assumed the role of producer. The “Dog Man” series, introduced in 2016, has since expanded to a total of 12 books, and even spawned a spinoff titled “Cat Kid Comic Club“.
In an interview with Barnes & Noble in 2019, Pilkey shared that he created his first Dog Man comic book while in the second grade. Back then, Dog Man was just an ordinary dog who gained superpowers after getting hit by a bolt of lightning!
