Dogspiracy will be in UK cinemas from 1st August 

Bulldog Film Distribution has announced that their upcoming documentary, titled “Dogspiracy,” is set to hit UK movie theaters starting from the 1st of August. Screenings and question-and-answer sessions will occur throughout August in various locations across the UK, including several cinemas hosting a special one-time event on Tuesday, 26th August to celebrate National Dog Day.

Worldwide, countless dog breeders and animal shelters provide puppies ethically, yet regrettably, there exists a shadowy network that mistreats and unfairly profits from dogs.

Titled “Dogspiracy,” this documentary, directed by Paul Crompton, chronicles the journey of British vet, author, and animal welfare advocate Dr. Marc Abraham OBE as he delves into the intricacies of the US puppy mill pipeline, canine fertility clinics, and illegal puppy trading. Along his journey in both America and the UK, he encounters empathetic policymakers who have the potential to shape laws for the better. However, he eventually exposes a conspiracy that impedes crucial, necessary legislation from being enacted, leading to years more of legalized cruelty. Ultimately, “Dogspiracy” aims to educate the public on how to make ethical choices, despite the influence and obstruction by some powerful politicians.

Dogspiracy” is not just an enlightening documentary, but also a rallying cry, urging citizens to exert influence on the UK and U.S. administrations and policymakers to take action and improve animal welfare.

In the United States, Marc convenes with activists in Pennsylvania to present Victoria’s Act, a legislation comparable to Lucy’s Law. Currently, only a few states like California, Maryland, and New York have managed to pass bills that forbid the retail sale of puppies and kittens bred commercially in pet stores. At this point, Pennsylvania does not plan on submitting Victoria’s Act for a vote anytime soon.

In 2020, a law known as Lucy’s Law was implemented in the UK, restricting pet shops and commercial third-party sellers from offering puppies and kittens under six months old for sale. Instead, these animals should be acquired either directly from the breeder or from reliable rescue shelters. Dr Marc Abraham OBE played a pivotal role in advocating for this law, securing support from politicians of various parties, activists, the general public, and notable figures such as Ricky Gervais, Rachel Riley, and Peter Egan.

Progress was continued towards safeguarding a variety of animals, ranging from household pets to farm livestock, under the proposed and eagerly awaited Kept Animals Bill. This legislation aimed to establish guidelines for the wellbeing of specific animals that are either resident within, imported to, or exported from Great Britain. The bill also encompassed prohibiting puppy smuggling, a topic further discussed in the documentary. Regrettably, this bill was withdrawn from Parliament in 2023.

Skip ahead to 2025, and there have been more encouraging developments to enhance animal welfare in the UK. The Animal Welfare (Import of Dogs, Cats, and Ferrets) Bill has successfully passed its final reading in the House of Commons, and is now on its way to the Lords for consideration. This legislation aims to “establish rules regarding and associated with limiting the importation and non-commercial movement of dogs, cats, and ferrets,” including a ban on illicit puppy imports. The Dogspiracy team has expressed delight over these developments.
