On Monday, Dohee Kim, founder of XLIM and stylist, gave a sneak peek at his upcoming New Balance 509 design. This new model marks a significant shift from his previous collaboration with the shoe manufacturer based in Boston. Previously, he brought back the running shoe popular during the early 2000s by creating collaborative versions that were released in Fall 2024. These designs featured shimmering accents and primarily black color schemes.
Instead of the smooth and dark style seen in previous 509 models, the new red version showcases vibrant hairy suede accents and a natural rubber sole with a gum finish. This trend towards textures that are soft to the touch and colors that are richly saturated is similar to the direction taken by XLIM’s “Episode 7” collection, which incorporated bright splashes of CMYK tones.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to see how Dohee Kim is progressing the color story from XLIM’s “episodes” with an alluring new black colorway for his 509s. The sleek black suede overlays beautifully contrast the open-textured dark purple mesh underlays, resulting in a minimalist, ink-inspired color scheme. His knack for blending technical elements with organic finishes is evident once again, as a worn-in midsole adds an authentic patina to these stunning shoes.
At this point in time, no specific launch date or cost details have been disclosed. Nevertheless, it’s anticipated that the collaboration between Dohee Kim and New Balance on model 509 will become available on the official New Balance web store and selected retailers around Fall 2025.
