Don Buchwald, Longtime Hollywood Talent Agent, Dies at 88

As a gamer and someone who has always been fascinated by the behind-the-scenes world of entertainment, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of loss with the passing of Don Buchwald. His influence on the industry, particularly in radio and media, is undeniable.

The renowned talent agent Don Buchwald, known for his vibrant personality, spent the last 40 years in the entertainment industry representing notable figures such as Howard Stern. Sadly, he passed away at the age of 88.

Monty Buchwald passed away at his eastern home in the Berkshires on Monday due to natural reasons, according to his representation.

As a gamer from Brooklyn, I started my own agency, Don Buchwald & Associates, back in 1977 with a small team of five agents. Later on, in 1992, I expanded our business by opening an office in Los Angeles. Nowadays, our bicoastal firm, which we simply call Buchwald, is home to a dynamic workforce of around 130 people. We cover various aspects of entertainment and media.

Buchwald acted as Stern’s representative, organizer, and spokesperson. In the year 2015, he secured a remarkable deal for his most distinguished client with Sirius XM satellite radio, valued at approximately $90 million annually. Stern affectionately referred to him as “Superagent.”

He also repped Stern’s sidekick, Robin Quivers.

At Brooklyn College, Buchwald studied theater as his major and participated in the Radio & TV division of the college.

In 1959, after graduating, he began his career in acting and managing theaters in New York, Los Angeles, and other cities. Then, in 1964, he teamed up with another alumnus from B.C., Monty Silver, to establish a talent agency based in New York.

Fond of a fedora, he was a longtime member of the Friars Club.

Among the people who made it through are his long-time spouse, Maggie; Julia, the head of the West Coast branch of the company, who is his daughter; Laura, an accomplished author, also her daughter; and Bryan, her husband, who is part of their family.

“Julia assured, ‘Forty-seven years after my father founded this remarkable agency, I commit to not only preserving its success but also advancing it as we move forward. My dedicated colleagues and I are determined to honor his legacy and make him proud.'”
