Don Cheadle Joked About Armor Wars When Asked About Its Status, But I’m Legitimately Worried About What’s Happening With War Machine’s Movie

As a long-time Marvel fan and avid gamer, I’ve been following the MCU journey since its inception, and Don Cheadle’s portrayal of James Rhodes has always been one of my favorites. It’s been an exciting ride, watching Rhodey transform from sidekick to War Machine, and I’ve eagerly anticipated his solo adventure, Armor Wars.

Initially, Terrence Howard portrayed James Rhodes in the 2008 film “Iron Man”, but Don Cheadle has been playing the role since “Iron Man 2” in 2010, where Rhodey transitioned into War Machine. Over the past 14 years, Cheadle has appeared as the character in a total of 10 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions, including streaming series like “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier”, “What If…?” and “Secret Invasion”. Moreover, it’s been confirmed that Cheadle will lead the upcoming Marvel movie “Armor Wars”, which was initially planned as a TV show. Recently, when asked about the project’s status, Cheadle joked, but in truth, I am concerned about the current state of “Armor Wars”.

How Don Cheadle Joked About Armor Wars

Actor Don Cheadle has been making appearances at various media outlets to promote his latest miniseries, titled “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist“. This series is now available for streaming with a Peacock subscription. One of his interviews was on the show TODAY. During the discussion, Al Roker inquired whether Cheadle had any information to share about “Armor Wars“, and the former star of “Boogie Nights” revealed:

What’s Armor Wars?

After cracking the joke, Cheadle broke into a grin, followed by the familiar quote, “I could share it with you, but then I’d have to eliminate you.” So, rest assured, details regarding Armor Wars will remain tightly sealed by him. To be fair, Marvel consistently stresses to its actors the importance of keeping secretive about spoilers, and there has been much humor surrounding the idea that Marvel employs agents or snipers to monitor them, ensuring they adhere to this rule.

Is Armor Wars Even Still Happening?

It’s clear that Don Cheadle, who plays James Rhodes in the Iron Man series, might be keeping quiet about the details of Armor Wars, but I can’t help but wonder if it’s still in development. The project was initially announced as a TV show three years ago and subsequently transformed into a movie two years back. For those not in the know, Armor Wars is based on a comic book storyline featuring Iron Man, with James Rhodes grappling with Tony Stark’s worst fear: his advanced technology falling into the wrong hands posthumously.

Given Rhodey’s long-standing presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s only fitting that he gets his own film, and frankly, the Armor Wars storyline is crucial for understanding the impact of the Secret Invasion twist on his character. Unfortunately, despite being written by Yassir Lester, there’s still no release date set for this movie, and we haven’t heard anything about who will direct it yet. It would have been ideal to get an official update about Armor Wars at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con or D23, but even without that, the news of Robert Downey Jr. playing Doctor Doom would have stolen the show.

As a die-hard Marvel fan, it’s been a while since we heard anything official about Armor Wars fitting into Marvel Studios’ movie lineup, which has me feeling a bit anxious. With no updates in sight, it seems plausible that the project might be quietly put on hold. If that’s the case, I don’t think Armor Wars would make it to the February 13, 2026 slot they’ve reserved. November 6, 2026 could still work, but I’d rather see that date assigned to something exciting like Doctor Strange 3. The two dates reserved for post-Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027 are intriguing, but I’m crossing my fingers that Spider-Man 4 and the X-Men reboot grab those instead.

I’m still holding out hope for Armor Wars, but it’s peculiar that there hasn’t been much progress despite the passage of time. However, perhaps Don Cheadle knows something encouraging about its status that hasn’t been revealed to the public yet. If so, I can hardly wait to hear an update from him, Kevin Feige, or any other Marvel insider.
