As a seasoned film enthusiast who’s seen more than my fair share of biopics and political dramas, I must say that “The Apprentice” has certainly piqued my interest. The fact that it’s stirring up such a storm around former President Donald Trump only adds to its allure.

As for the ongoing Republican White House nominee, they’ve publicly criticized the film “The Apprentice,” featuring Sebastian Stan in the role of Trump during his rise as a real estate tycoon under the guidance of Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong). The movie was released this weekend by Briarcliff Entertainment, and it’s clear that Trump has no positive feelings towards this production.
Trump expressed his disapproval on his Truth Social platform, labeling The Apprentice as a “deceptive” and “uncouth” production. He claimed that the movie’s release before the 2024 Presidential Election was intended to harm what he considers to be the most significant political movement in the history of our nation. As expected, his online outburst followed typical patterns, given the project doesn’t present him in the most favorable light. With the movie’s opening weekend upon us, the film has become more pertinent than ever, and Trump seizes every opportunity to be part of any news narrative that includes his name.
As a movie enthusiast, it didn’t take long for me to learn about Trump’s tweet regarding our film team. Not long after, the director hopped onto his X page to share a heartfelt thank-you note towards Trump for resolving the matter. He even invited Trump for further discussion if he was interested. However, in a playful gesture, the director mentioned that he was swamped with media commitments for our film but hinted at possibly reaching out tomorrow. So far, there’s been no reply from Trump to the director’s latest post.
The Apprentice Debuted to Lackluster Numbers Over the Weekend
The movie “The Apprentice” debuted on 1,740 screens during the weekend, which is a decent number for a film with a past struggle in securing a distributor, but its box office performance was rather modest, raking in only $1.58 million. Given the sensational nature of the ongoing presidential race, any Trump-related film might not be as surprising or scandalous as the actual events in his life. The film has received favorable reviews, scoring 78% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive 85% on Popcornmeter, reflecting audience reactions on the site. However, it seems that reaching undecided viewers about the movie has been challenging so far.
Following the debut of The Apprentice at the Cannes Film Festival, representatives from the Trump campaign warned they might file a lawsuit against the movie, according to a statement issued by the campaign’s main spokesperson, Steven Cheung. The message stated:
We plan to take legal action against these so-called filmmakers for making baseless claims. Their work is nothing more than a fabrication, spreading lies that have been proven false on numerous occasions. Similar to the controversial Biden Trials, this appears to be an attempt by Hollywood’s influential figures to interfere in elections, as they believe President Trump will regain the White House and defeat their preferred candidate, since all their efforts thus far have been unsuccessful.
The movie titled “The Apprentice,” authored by Gabriel Sherman, follows Donald Trump’s journey as a real estate tycoon in New York during the 70s and 80s. It emphasizes his association with lawyer Roy Cohn and the impact of their mentor-mentee relationship on Trump. The film’s portrayal of Trump might be problematic for his campaign, as it features scenes that could potentially present him in a negative light, such as an alleged violent act against his first wife Ivana (portrayed by Maria Bakalova) and undergoing cosmetic surgery. Following the movie’s debut at Cannes, the director extended an invitation to Trump, suggesting a meeting where he would screen the film with Trump personally.
It’s not guaranteed that this film wouldn’t appeal to him. In fact, it might not be something he’d enjoy. However, I believe he would find it intriguing. As I mentioned earlier, I’d be willing to discuss the movie with him, regardless of location, and if they’re interested, arrange a screening followed by a conversation. This was my proposal to the Trump campaign.
