As a long-time gamer who has spent countless hours virtually walking the runways of Milan and Paris, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia as I read about the potential departure of Donatella Versace from her iconic fashion house. The Versace brand has been a staple in my virtual wardrobe for years, its bold patterns and vibrant colors a testament to Gianni Versace’s unparalleled vision.
Donatella’s journey from assistant to creative director, following the tragic death of her brother Gianni, is a tale that resonates deeply with me. In my gaming world, I too have had to step up when the leader has fallen, and I know firsthand the challenges that come with filling such large shoes.
The rumors of Donatella’s departure are concerning, not just for the fashion industry, but also for those of us who admire her tenacity and resilience. If these reports are true, it would indeed mark a turning point in the fashion world. But I can’t help but think that even if she leaves Versace, Donatella Versace will always be synonymous with the brand that bears her name.
And as for a joke to lighten the mood, here it is: They say when life gives you lemons, make lemonade. When life gives you a fashion crisis, call Donatella Versace! She’ll whip up something fabulous in no time!
Is it possible that Donatella Versace and Capri Holdings, her brand’s American parent company, may be parting ways in the near future?
Having spent years working in the fashion industry and observing numerous high-profile designers come and go, I can’t help but feel a sense of unease about Donatella Versace’s future at her family’s firm. With her contract with Capri Holdings set to expire in February, it seems that the rumors swirling around her position are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. As someone who has seen the ups and downs of this industry, I know all too well how quickly things can change, and the uncertainty surrounding Donatella’s future is certainly cause for concern.
According to an initial report from WWD, it appears that Capri Holdings could be collaborating with Barclays in an effort to offload both Versace and Jimmy Choo, aiming to devote more attention to the rejuvenation of the American ready-to-wear label, Michael Kors.
Next month marks the end of Versace’s partnership with Capri, and there have been recurring disagreements between the designer and Capri CEO John D. Idol. According to Italian fashion trade MF Fashion, Donatella Versace’s contract, which expires in February, will not be extended. MF also suggests that Dario Vitale, who recently left his position as design director at Miu Miu, might take over from Donatella Versace.
To date, I’ve yet to receive a definitive response from the Versace press office regarding the recent rumors. The Hollywood Reporter Rome also didn’t receive a comment from them in response to their request.
The high-end fashion brand, established back in 1978 by Gianni Versace and his brother Santo, quickly gained massive popularity, earning legendary status both within the world of fashion and broader culture. A short while later, Gianni’s younger sister Donatella stepped into the company as an assistant.
Right from the get-go, Gianni Versace set himself apart by creating a striking, distinctive, and easily identifiable design aesthetic, marked by ornate motifs and vibrant hues. The Medusa emblem was adopted as a representation of alluring charm, mesmerizing anyone who lays eyes on it (with the mythical aspect of turning people to stone left out in promotional materials).
During the 1980s and 1990s, Versace stood shoulder to shoulder with Armani as a symbol of top-tier Italian fashion. In the 90s, Gianni Versace significantly contributed to the meteoric rise of supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Marpessa Hennink, and Claudia Schiffer. He also worked closely with artists such as Andy Warhol and designed costumes for the renowned La Scala opera house.
Following Gianni’s tragic death in Miami on July 15, 1997 (as portrayed in Ryan Murphy’s American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace), the creative reins were taken over by Donatella. Additionally, she received a 20% stake in the company. Her brother Santo got 30%. Allegra, Donatella’s daughter, inherited a 50% share of the company. Gianni’s partner, Antonio D’Amico, was also mentioned in the will, receiving an annuity and the right to reside in Versace’s properties.
Regrettably, some family disputes arose which made Antonio feel unwelcome. Eventually, D’Amico decided to sell off his share and departed from the Versace family.
During the initial years following Gianni’s era, the Versace brand encountered challenging times, with outcomes significantly different from its past triumphs. The company went through a succession of CEOs amidst declining sales and mounting losses. Donatella Versace’s leadership role frequently came under scrutiny and criticism. There were rumors of internal family disputes. Confidential sources portray the relationship between Donatella and her brother Santo as strained and confrontational. Eventually, Santo found himself marginalized, losing his authority to his sister.
Under Donatella’s leadership, the company faced difficulties, yet she persisted. Over time, Versace managed to bounce back, but it was evident to both the brand’s insiders and outsiders that Donatella was not a replacement for Gianni.
In 2014, the business, which had been run by a family and operated within that family, decided to sell 20% of its ownership to the Blackstone investment fund. Four years later, in 2018, this company was bought over by the Capri Holdings conglomerate for $2.12 billion. During this acquisition, Donatella continued her role as the creative director.
Today, whispers about her potential exit from the company, which may not be voluntary, are becoming louder. It’s being suggested that Capri Holdings is displeased with their financial performance. As reported by WWD, there have been multiple disagreements between the designer and Capri CEO John D. Idol.
Following Capri Holdings’ purchase, the brand achieved a revenue of $1.1 billion in the year 2023. However, a sluggish global demand, particularly in China, has impacted the financial performance. From April to June, Versace experienced a 15.4% drop in revenues, recording an operating loss of $17 million. Sales also saw substantial declines in Europe and the USA during this period.

Donatella’s exit from the company signifies a significant shift in the fashion industry, as she is the last active Versace family member involved with the brand. Her brother Santo has been absent from the fashion scene for quite some time, focusing instead on philanthropic activities through his namesake foundation. Beyond her design work, Donatella has garnered considerable attention as a media personality, amassing a large following on social media due to her civic engagement, philanthropy, and advocacy for LGBTQIA+ rights. Last May, she was bestowed with the title of Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, one of Italy’s most prestigious civilian honors.
As a lifelong fashion enthusiast and industry insider with decades of experience, I can’t help but wonder if Milan Fashion Week will mark Donatella Versace’s final catwalk show. With her brother Gianni’s legacy looming large over the brand, it’s been a challenge for her to carve out her own identity and maintain the iconic status of the Versace empire. As someone who has followed her career closely, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions at the thought of seeing her take her final bow on the catwalk. Regardless of what the future holds, Donatella Versace has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the fashion world and will forever be remembered as a trailblazer in the industry.
