The highly anticipated “Donkey Kong Bananza” is just around the corner, and Switch 2 enthusiasts can hardly wait to dive into its 3D platforming experience. With visuals reminiscent of Super Mario Odyssey on steroids, it’s evident that this game is a must-have for Nintendo Switch 2 owners. Yet, some devoted fans have pointed out occasional performance lags, causing a stir among the gaming community.
As a dedicated fan, I’d like to share that Kazuya Takahashi, the mastermind behind Bananza, admitted to experiencing minor performance hiccups during conversations with Spanish outlet Lavanguardia (thanks to Nintendo Everything for the scoop). Takahashi explained that they dabbled with some visual effects, but ultimately opted for an emphasis on fun, even if it means a touch of slowness here and there.
Here’s what the Donkey Kong Bananza director had to say about it:
“There are several factors to consider. First, we intentionally used effects like hit-stop and slow motion to emphasize impacts. Second, because we use voxel technology, there are times when there are major changes and destruction in the environment. We’re aware that performance may drop slightly at these times. However, as you say, overall the game is smooth, and at points where large-scale changes occur, we prioritized fun and playability.”
Occasionally, performance problems can mar a game’s appeal, but for the most part, they are relatively minor concerns. To date, Bananza appears promising with its 3D platformer genre, and upcoming reviews will provide insights into its performance. Granted, it is unfortunate when a highly anticipated exclusive title experiences some performance issues, but as long as these aren’t persistent or catastrophic, they should not detract significantly from the gameplay experience.
It’s intriguing to contemplate whether “Donkey Kong Bananza” might become an essential title for the upcoming Switch 2, joining the ranks of games like Mario Kart World. The idea that this game was initially envisioned as a Switch title seems almost fantastical now, even with the GameShare feature. However, with its exclusivity to the Switch 2, we’re confident that it will outperform anything it could have achieved on the original system.
