As a long-time Blue Bloods enthusiast and ardent fan of Donnie Wahlberg‘s portrayal of Danny Reagan, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and apprehension as the series seems poised for a continuation. The idea of seeing more of the Reagan family is enticing, but the prospect of Danny getting his own spin-off has me both hopeful and slightly skeptical, given the previous attempt didn’t quite take off.
No one’s been stumping for “Blue Bloods” to continue harder than Donnie Wahlberg — and with CBS’ recent announcement that it’s planning to franchise out the family-centered procedural, it looks like he’ll be getting his wish. But the question remains: will it involve Wahlberg somehow? The actor was pretty cagey when a fan asked him if this is really the end of the road for Danny Reagan and his clan.
During an Instagram Q&A session with VIPs during the New Kids on the Block tour, Wahlberg expressed a positive outlook for potential future projects beyond the expected December end of “Blue Bloods”. He stated, “We filmed what appears to be the final season of ‘Blue Bloods’, which will air starting in October. Perhaps there’ll be more after that. I don’t have any official updates, but there are plans in motion. So something exciting might transpire.”
It appears discussions have taken place about keeping Mark Wahlberg involved in the show’s universe when it potentially spins off at some point in the future, although no definitive decisions have been made yet. If the upcoming project indeed focuses on his character, that would certainly add an interesting twist. There were even whispers of ongoing talks between CBS and Wahlberg about a spin-off centered around Danny.
A previous attempt at giving Danny Reagan his own show did not take off
It seems that CBS had talks with Donnie Wahlberg’s representatives about creating a spin-off focusing on Danny Reagan, but those discussions fell through and the project didn’t move forward. His recent comments at an NKOTB concert give hope, but we’ll have to wait and see if anything changes in the future.
CBS is being cautious with any upcoming “Blue Bloods” spin-offs, much like how they’re carefully crafting the “Fire Country” spin-off series, “Sheriff Country.” David Stapf, president of CBS Studios, shared with Deadline that while there’s no immediate development on the horizon for potential follow-ups to Blue Bloods, it’s a popular brand and title. He emphasized that they want to ensure the continuation is well thought out, saying, “We have to get it right.” They plan to celebrate the current season of Blue Bloods extensively before deciding on the next step for the series, giving them ample time to figure out what comes next.
Previously, I’ve held back on discussing whether CBS Entertainment would extend more seasons for the New York-based procedural. However, my heart lies with this talented cast and their dedication to the show. Every series eventually reaches its conclusion. It’s crucial for us to keep our schedule fresh. As of now, we plan to wrap up the show by December.
