Don’t Miss Anya Taylor-Joy’s ‘Split’ Now Streaming Free on Tubi!

As a cinephile, I can’t contain my excitement! If you haven’t already seen it, Split, the nail-biting masterpiece by M. Night Shyamalan featuring the captivating performances of Anya Taylor-Joy and James McAvoy, is now up for grabs to stream! Starting April 1, this underappreciated modern thriller will find its home on Tubi, offering viewers a chance to watch it free of charge. Just a heads up, you’ll encounter a few ads here and there, but trust me, they’re well worth it for the opportunity to witness one of the most underrated cinematic gems in recent memory!

Shyamalan’s film Split was his comeback project following his exile from Hollywood after the flops of The Last Airbender and After Earth. In 2015, he went back to his roots in horror with the found-footage movie, The Visit, which was a critical success. After its box office triumph, Shyamalan signed a deal with Universal Pictures, severing ties with Touchstone Pictures, the Disney-owned studio known for adult-oriented films.

In “Split,” we follow the story of three friends – Casey, Claire, and Marcia – who encounter a dangerous situation when they are abducted by an unknown man and taken to his secret underground shelter. As they soon discover, this man suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder, causing each of his personas to behave in increasingly erratic ways. The film’s synopsis reads:

“In the thrilling psychological horror ‘Split,’ three girls are kidnapped by a man with 24 distinct identities. They must find a way to outwit these various personalities and escape before they become victims of the disturbed individual’s darkest nature.

A man with 23 identified personas abducts three girls. Their challenge is to free themselves before a potentially terrifying 24th personality surfaces.

The film, titled “The Visit,” was made on a modest budget of $9 million – relatively small compared to Shyamalan’s initial productions. With a production cost of $5 million for this movie, it seems the limited resources were instrumental in creating a well-liked film. In early 2017, another film by Shyamalan named “Split” hit theaters and was warmly received. This project represented a return to fundamental filmmaking techniques for Shyamalan and featured two exceptional actors as the main leads. Jessica Chastain had recently achieved success with “The Witch” and “Morgan,” while James McAvoy sought to explore roles outside the superhero genre, which is ironic given that “Split” belongs to a franchise that shares some traits with the superhero genre.

A Franchise Experiment That Didn’t End Very Well

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Split

The movie concludes with a long-anticipated twist by M. Night Shyamalan, who felt confident enough to incorporate Split into a larger storyline. In the final scene, it was unveiled that David Dunn from Unbreakable appeared, linking this film’s universe to the superhero-esque movie featuring Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson. Following the success of Split, Shyamalan aimed to finish the trilogy based on Unbreakable, but the outcome didn’t meet his expectations as he had hoped.

2019’s film titled “Glass” featured returning characters from both “Unbreakable” and “Split“. Critical reception was divided, yet the movie managed to earn a decent sum at the box office. However, it fell short when measured against other films in the series. Despite James McAvoy’s commendable performance, the rest of the cast seemed hampered by a subpar script. While M. Night Shyamalan didn’t explicitly express a desire for more, “Glass” served as an exploration of the world that ultimately proved unexciting to audiences.
