Movie enthusiasts who enjoy action-packed films have a fantastic opportunity coming up this month! One of the genre’s unsung heroes, directed by none other than the man behind “Taken,” is making its way to free streaming. Originally released in 2004, this film features an array of martial arts, gunfights, explosions, daring parkour sequences, and even thought-provoking social commentary. It takes viewers on a thrilling journey to the year 2010 and one of the downtrodden suburbs of Paris: Banlieue 13, also known as B13.
Under the guidance of the team responsible for Liam Neeson’s acclaimed action film, Taken, including director Pierre Morel and writer/producer Luc Besson, District B13 features David Belle as lead character Leïto, a rebellious resident of B13, alongside Cyril Raffaelli, a skilled martial artist often overlooked, who plays undercover officer Damien Tomaso. When the duo are pursued by ruthless gangster K2, portrayed by Tony D’Amario in one of his final roles before his passing in 2005.
Starting March 14, District B13 will be available to stream for free on [Platform Name]. If you’re a fan of action, martial arts, parkour, thrilling stunts, or appreciate French cinema, this is definitely worth your time! For more details about the movie, take a look at its official synopsis provided below.
In contemporary Paris, a police officer (Cyril Raffaelli) belonging to an elite task force is compelled to venture into a lawless slum to disarm a bomb that has been seized by Taha (Larbi Naceri), a notorious gangster. This policeman teams up with a layman (David Belle) who is on a mission to save his sister (Dany Verissimo) from the same criminal, who also possesses the explosive device.
‘District B13‘ Spawned Both a Sequel & a Hollywood Remake
Both viewers and reviewers were equally captivated by the action-packed storyline of District B13. On Rotten Tomatoes, it received an impressive 82% rating from critics and a respectable 78% from audiences. The critical consensus was that “District B13 is a heart-pounding rollercoaster ride, with its breathtaking action scenes compensating for any shortcomings in exposition.
The movie titled “District B13” generated a follow-up in 2009 called “District 13: Ultimatum.” This new installment brings back David Belle’s agile parkour character Leïto and Cyril Raffaelli’s fist-fighting cop Damien, who find themselves once more battling for tranquility in the outer Paris slums amid a violent gang conflict and the city’s harsh unofficial law enforcers. Similar to its original version, the sequel received positive reviews from critics (75% on Rotten Tomatoes), but divided audiences (55%). The initial movie has also been re-imagined in Hollywood, with the late “Fast and Furious” star Paul Walker teaming up with a recurring David Belle in the 2014 action film “Brick Mansions.” Regrettably, this was one of Walker’s final films before his passing. Critics were not kind to “Brick Mansions,” as they felt that both the talented cast and the visual appeal of parkour were squandered in the movie.
Parkour has been significantly underrepresented in movies, often making brief appearances in films such as Casino Royale, Assassin’s Creed, and a few others. However, it’s good to know that renowned director Michael Bay is addressing this issue, with his 2025 documentary “We Are Storror” showcasing the thrilling feats of seven top-tier parkour athletes.
