Don’t Miss the IMAX 70mm Return of Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ This Month!

It seems that “Sinners” may be vacating its IMAX theaters this weekend, making room for “Thunderbolts”. However, good news for fans as they’ll have an opportunity to watch it on the top-notch 70mm IMAX format soon, as tickets are now available for a forthcoming limited re-release. The horror film has gained massive popularity, with positive buzz about the movie spreading rapidly during its first two weekends, resulting in only a 6% dip at the box office. A significant portion of the film’s earnings have stemmed from IMAX screens, notably the highly anticipated 70mm film prints, which director Ryan Coogler emphasized as a must-see experience in a promotional video. Despite being sold out shows throughout the week, the movie is about to depart from IMAX theaters. But fear not, fans who missed out on the optimal viewing experience will have another opportunity within a few weeks.

IndieWire announces that the movie “Sinners” will be back on IMAX screens starting from May 15 (Thursday) and run till May 21 (Wednesday). The movie will be screened in all nine theaters capable of showing it in 70mm IMAX format. Tickets for this limited re-release, as well as regular screenings, are available now. In the following weeks, “Sinners” will give way to “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” on these IMAX screens. Here’s a list of the nine IMAX theaters where you can watch “Sinners” in 70mm format.

  • City Walk Stadium 19 + IMAX (Los Angeles)
  • Irvine Spectrum and IMAX (Irvine)
  • Lincoln Square 13 + IMAX (New York)
  • Metreon 16 + IMAX (San Francisco)

Concerning the new launch, Jeff Goldstein, President of Global Distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures, made the following announcement:

For the upcoming relaunch, Jeff Goldstein, head of Global Distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures, issued this statement:

Regarding the second release, here’s what Jeff Goldstein, president of Global Distribution at Warner Bros. Pictures, had to say:

Based on audience feedback, we’ve taken note. If any movie demands to be watched in an extraordinary, grand-scale format, it’s ‘Sinners.’ Ryan has created a film that fans who value the artistry behind such large-format productions have truly appreciated, and we wanted to make sure everyone gets a chance to witness it – or revisit it – on the massive 70mm IMAX screen.

‘Sinners’ Demands To Be Seen in IMAX

The IMAX screens accounted for 20% of the total box office earnings during the premiere weekend of “Sinners”, making it an optimal way for fans to watch the movie. Much like the anticipation surrounding “Oppenheimer” in 2023, some viewers have been eagerly waiting to catch the film in the highly publicized format, believing it offers superior value compared to other viewing options. With audiences increasingly reluctant to visit cinemas and preferring to stream films, IMAX has emerged as a compelling reason for moviegoers to attend theaters, providing an immersive experience unattainable at home.

Due to the immense popularity of the movie “Sinners,” it’s highly probable that there will be additional IMAX rerelesases this year. Although the summer movie season is packed with films like “How to Train Your Dragon,” “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” “Superman,” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” all vying for the limited IMAX screens, Warner Bros. might be able to arrange another screening of “Sinners” during fall. This could prove advantageous for the Halloween season, serving as a means to rekindle interest in the movie as awards season draws near. It seems reasonable to assume that Warner Bros. will work to bring “Sinners” back to IMAX screens following this initial limited rerlease.
