Hard to believe, but Netflix has been a part of our lives for more than 25 years now! Do you remember waiting for DVDs to arrive in the post? Over these many years, countless movies and TV shows have graced its screens, only to make way for others. As expected, there are some departures this May, and swapping out content is nothing unusual for Netflix. They’re constantly updating their catalog to make room for new arrivals. The titles leaving Netflix at the beginning of summer are often subjects of debate, so what will be disappearing from your screen next?
Attention superhero enthusiasts and fans of bawdy humor! Mark your calendars as an epic monster showdown and a staple of the gangster genre will be ending soon, along with many other titles. Here’s a sneak peek at some outstanding films that will be departing from Netflix in June:
1. “The Incredibles” – Join the Parr family as they embrace their powers to save the world.
2. “Scarface” – Follow Tony Montana’s rise and fall in the criminal underworld.
3. “Goodfellas” – Delve into the lives of Henry Hill and his associates in the Mafia.
4. “Pulp Fiction” – Witness the intertwining stories of Los Angeles mobsters.
5. “The Matrix” – Explore a dystopian future where reality is not as it seems.
Christopher Nolan’s ‘Dark Knight’ Trilogy
Leaving June 1
Christian Bale is wrapping up his tenure in Gotham City. By June 1st, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises will no longer be available on Netflix. The Nolan trilogy is often considered one of the finest, if not the finest, sets of superhero films ever produced. The Dark Knight, in particular, boasts a legendary status as one of the greatest movies ever made, with Heath Ledger’s Joker performance being a standout masterclass.
The movie Batman Begins earned a moderate sum of $373 million at the box office, but the following two Dark Knight films went beyond the billion-dollar mark. Alongside Christian Bale and Heath Ledger, the trilogy’s supporting cast included Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Gary Oldman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Aaron Eckhart, Morgan Freeman, and more. Christopher Nolan’s employment of IMAX cameras and practical effects is a signature element both for the director and the films themselves. As Netflix prepares to part ways with Bruce Wayne, the franchise can still be streamed on Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and whatever name HBO/Max has chosen today. It was announced that the Dark Knight trilogy will no longer be available on Netflix as of June 1.
‘Ted’ and ‘Ted 2’
Leaving June 1
Starting next month, you won’t find Seth MacFarlane’s profanity-laden teddy bear series on Netflix anymore. In “Ted,” MacFarlane voices the titular character, a toy brought to life by John’s childhood wish. The initial release of Ted in 2012 was a massive success, earning $550 million globally, making it the second-highest-grossing R-rated comedy ever, trailing only “The Hangover Part II.” However, its sequel, released in 2015, garnered a more modest $215 million.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement about the future of the “Ted” franchise! Starting from 2024, a prequel series will be airing on Peacock, and there’s even an animated adaptation in the pipeline. Incredibly, our beloved stars – Seth MacFarlane, Mark Wahlberg, Amanda Seyfried, and Jessica Barth – have confirmed their return to the franchise!
Unfortunately, it seems that Netflix is the only platform where you can stream “Ted” without forking out cash for a rental. So, if you’re yet to catch this hilarious flick or need a refresher, now’s your chance! But mark my words, Ted and Ted 2 will be bidding farewell from Netflix on June 1, so get ready to tune in before then!
‘Goodfellas’
Leaving June 1
Goodfellas is often recognized as a pinnacle achievement in Martin Scorsese’s filmmaking journey and the gangster movie genre. The storyline is well-known to many. Characters portrayed by Ray Liotta (Henry Hill), Robert De Niro (Jimmy Conway), and Joe Pesci (Tommy DeVito) ascend through the Mafia ranks together. Notable actors like Paul Sorvino, Lorraine Bracco, Debi Mazar, Frank Pellegrino, Tony Sirico, Kevin Corrigan, Samuel L. Jackson, and Tobin Bell also appear in the movie. Interestingly, Scorsese also provided minor roles to his own parents, Charles and Catherine.
The movie “Goodfellas,” released in September 1990, made only $6.3 million on its debut, but it was enough to secure the top spot at the box office that month. In 2000, the film was deemed as culturally, historically, or aesthetically important and was added to the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry. Its impact is still evident today, with “The Sopranos” being one of its many inspirations. However, despite leaving Netflix on June 1, you can still watch “Goodfellas” on platforms such as Roku, YouTube TV, Hulu, Prime Video, and Max.
‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’
Leaving June 14
Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire is the latest installment in the shared movie universe known as the ‘Monsterverse’, which kicked off in 2014 with the reboot of Godzilla. In this new story, Godzilla teams up with Kong to thwart King Ghidorah (Skar King) and his titan minion Shimo from attacking Earth. The film features a cast including Rebecca Hall, Brian Tyree Henry, Dan Stevens, and Rachel House.
Despite some mixed critical opinions, the film “Godzilla vs. Kong” managed to earn a staggering $572 million globally. This made it the most profitable title in the Monsterverse, surpassing both the highest-grossing Godzilla and King Kong films, which have been around since 1954 (Godzilla) and 1933 (King Kong). After departing from Netflix, “Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire” can still be streamed on Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and the often confusing HBO or Max. As a reminder, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” will be leaving on June 14th.
