The action-packed game “DOOM: The Dark Ages” has been released, and players are finding pleasure in its gameplay mechanics. Shooting remains fun, the larger levels encourage more exploration, and the Shield Saw is top-notch. However, it’s disappointing that id Software decided to eliminate the Glory Kill system, which was introduced in the 2016 reboot.
Due to the Shield Saw’s destructive nature, it’s not surprising that DOOM: The Dark Ages opting to eliminate Glory Kills is a reasonable choice. Given the game’s emphasis on swift action, incorporating Glory Kills might have disrupted the speed. However, executing enemies with the R3 button was enjoyable, and this feature will be sorely missed.
Glory Kills aren’t a completely novel concept, as they’ve been utilized in games such as the original God of War for quite some time. However, they were typically confined to third-person action games, and they weren’t common in first-person shooters. In most cases, these games would have you shoot your opponents instead. First-person games that emphasize melee combat like Chronicles of Riddick are exceptions, but the majority of titles don’t incorporate this feature beyond gunplay.
Experiencing this feature in DOOM 2016 and Eternal was a breath of fresh air, as it elevated enemy-killing into something more gratifying and tactical. The Glory Kills offer rewards such as additional ammunition and health packs, allowing players to fire at enemies, wait for them to emit a glow, and then trigger this mechanism. It’s not just enjoyable, but the added advantages help you stay alive longer and gather some much-needed ammo.
In DOOM: The Dark Ages, players won’t have to depend solely on Glory Kills for ammo and health. Since this feature has been removed, enemies will now drop a sufficient amount of these items through the Shield Saw and even when shot. Additionally, the emphasis on exploration means you’ll come across more ammo and health as you progress, which is advantageous.
From the overwhelmingly positive feedback and enthusiastic responses from fans online, it’s apparent that the Glory Kill system wasn’t essential for this installment. Taking risks is often necessary when continuing a series like DOOM to innovate gameplay. It seems that the developers at id Software opted for a different approach with The Dark Ages, and it appears their gamble has paid off.

It seems we have an affinity for games that combine characters and actions, and we’ll surely miss the thrill of the Glory Kill system. However, this doesn’t mean that DOOM: The Dark Ages is a subpar game; it was simply a standout feature. We won’t necessarily require its return in the next installment unless id Software comes up with an innovative way to reintroduce it.
