Disney has unveiled the initial trailer for the movie titled “More Crazy Than Ever Friday“, promising twice the body-swapping madness as suggested by the title. This new film, “More Crazy Than Ever Friday“, is a continuation of the storyline from the 2003 release “Crazy Friday“, which was in turn a remake of the 1976 Disney movie with the same name. In “Crazy Friday“, actresses Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan portrayed a mother and daughter, respectively, who unexpectedly exchanged bodies one day, leading them to learn about each other’s lives in order to better understand and eventually return to their original forms.
Disney has unveiled the initial teaser for the movie titled “Freakier Friday“, helmed by director Nisha Ganatra, who previously worked on “Late Night“. This time around, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis return to their characters Tess and Anna Coleman respectively. The plot revolves around a unique twist – a double body swap: Lohan’s Anna exchanges bodies with her daughter Harper (Julia Butters), while Curtis’s Tess trades places with Lily Davies (Sophia Hammons), the daughter of Anna’s new partner. Notable cast members from the original film, including Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal, Haley Hudson, Ryan Malgarini, and Mark Harmon, are also reprising their roles. New additions to the ensemble include Manny Jacinto (“The Acolyte“), Lucille Soong (“Fresh Off the Boat“), Rosalind Chao (“Star Trek: The Next Generation“), Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (“Never Have I Ever“) and Vanessa Bayer (“Saturday Night Live“) who are joining the cast. Check out the trailer below.
‘Freakier Friday,’ a Sequel 22 Years in the Making
As a movie enthusiast who’s always on the lookout for interesting twists in stories, I’ve been pondering over the concept of a new Freaky Friday installment. While it might seem like pushing the boundaries of the original novel’s premise, you’d be surprised to know that the book itself gave birth to two sequels – Summer Switch and A Billion for Boris. Remarkably, Disney has yet to bring these stories to life on screen. The 1995 TV film remake of Freaky Friday, part of The Wonderful World of Disney, as well as the 1976 and 2003 films, all centered around a mother-daughter swap. However, what sets Freakier Friday apart is that it will be the first time Disney continues this tale with the original cast reprising their roles, exploring the idea of legacy sequels with Lindsay Lohan stepping into the role of a mother herself.
The notion of Lindsay Lohan portraying a mother may cause millennials to realize their advancing years, given that “Freaky Friday” is set to hit theaters 22 years following its initial release – just four years short of the timeframe between “Tron” and “Tron: Legacy”. The success of Jamie Lee Curtis’ Academy Award-winning performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and Lohan’s resurgence in Netflix productions have prompted Disney to capitalize on nostalgia for the original film. Released in 2003, “Freaky Friday” earned $110 million domestically and $160 million globally with a production budget of $26 million, suggesting that this sequel could be a financially sound decision.
As “Freakier Friday” hits theaters, it signals a change in Disney’s focus, since two years ago, this type of movie might have been exclusively released on Disney+, similar to other long-awaited sequels featuring female leads such as “Hocus Pocus 2” and “Disenchanted”. Unlike some of Disney’s bigger summer blockbusters like “Thunderbolts”, “Lilo & Stitch”, and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, “Freakier Friday” is a smaller-scale production. However, it’s refreshing to see Disney return to its roots by producing a mid-budget film like they did in the past, which led to beloved titles such as the original “Freaky Friday”.
