Doug Emhoff Reviews His ‘SNL’ Impersonators: “The Group Chats Blow Up”

As a lifelong SNL enthusiast who grew up idolizing those iconic skits and mimicking them with friends during the week, seeing myself depicted on that very same stage has been nothing short of surreal. It’s like stepping into a dream, or finding out that your childhood hero is also your doppelgänger in an alternate universe.

This week, Doug Emhoff shared his thoughts about the different impersonators of him on Saturday Night Live. He finally answered the big question: Was it Martin Short or Andy Samberg who did the best job portraying him?

Martin Short left a greater impact on Doug Emhoff than his appearance might suggest, as he shared during an episode of the Politickin’ podcast with Gavin Newsom, Marshawn Lynch, and Doug Hendrickson. “Samberg is entertaining, humorous,” Emhoff said, “but it’s not exactly my style. Some of his lines, though, are quite witty.

For several sketches during the last presidential election in 2020, Doug Emhoff and his wife Kamala Harris became a topic of discussion nationwide. During this time, Beck Bennett, who resembles Emhoff with his hairstyle, portrayed the Second Gentleman on SNL. This occurred when SNL returned prior to the November election that year. In an interview this week, Emhoff commented that Bennett “has the right hairdo” and found the popular “Dougy” dance amusing, but perhaps not completely accurate.

Joe Biden’s second-in-command, Kamala Harris, later discussed her feelings about being portrayed on the program, having spent her childhood years enjoying those very same skits.

He declared, “This television series has been a part of my life since its inception. I was only ten years old when it first aired fifty years ago. Everybody eagerly awaited and watched it together. Each night, we’d reenact the humorous skits from that week, reminiscing about the classic moments from long ago.

He went on to say, “It’s quite something when you find yourself featured there. The chat rooms erupt with excitement about such moments… It’s just another bizarre yet wonderful experience I’ve had in this extraordinary world, and I relish it.

Apart from that, he shared his thoughts on Maya Rudolph’s portrayal of his wife. “She has significantly improved,” he commented. “This time, she returned to the role. It’s astonishing! She is spot-on. She’s done an excellent job.

This season on Saturday Night Live, Rudolph and Samberg team up with James Austin Johnson portraying Donald Trump, Jim Gaffigan playing Tim Walz, Bowen Yang as J.D. Vance, and Dana Carvey bringing back Joe Biden.
