Paramount Pictures and Doug Liman are taking a stand. The Stand, as a matter of fact.
The studio and a filmmaker are collaborating to transform Stephen King’s masterpiece into a movie. Liman is slated to direct this project, and he will also produce it alongside Tyler Thompson from Cross Creek Pictures. Earlier, they had worked together on the 2017 crime drama starring Tom Cruise titled American Made.
The writing phase of the project has commenced, focusing on adapting King’s most extensive work (1,152 pages) into a new form. This task is quickly gaining attention as one of the most sought-after writing projects around.
This groundbreaking book, initially published in 1978 and subsequently revised in 1990, is a literary masterpiece that has left an indelible mark on pop culture. Its influence can be seen across various platforms, including TV shows like “Lost,” musical acts such as Metallica, and numerous post-apocalyptic literature pieces.
In this captivating narrative, we delve into a struggle between right and wrong, set against a backdrop of an America decimated by a devastating virus, leaving only a few survivors. The tale interweaves the journeys of numerous characters including the Trashcan Man and Mother Abigail, as their stories unfold over extended periods. Readers find themselves cheering for these individuals, but the climactic battle is between a band of remaining humans confronting an Antichrist-like figure named Randall Flagg, in the desolate landscape known as Las Vegas.
The story of Stand has been reimagined as a miniseries on two separate occasions, first in 1994 and then again in 2020. Additionally, Marvel Comics have also presented their take on it. However, from a feature film perspective, it has posed challenges to numerous Hollywood producers. A variety of directors, such as George A. Romero, David Yates, and Ben Affleck, have attempted to handle the content, while Warner Bros. and CBS Films collaborated in its development during the 2010s.
According to reports, Liman and the production company seem to have their unique perspective for this project, which is planned as a standalone movie rather than part of a series or multiple films.
Liman has a knack for challenging Hollywood norms and creating an atypical body of work. Starting with indie hits like “Swingers” and “Go,” he later ventured into action films, initiating Universal’s Bourne series with “The Bourne Identity.” He also delved into the lives of the century’s most celebrated couple, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, in “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” His latest offering was a reimagining of the action genre, the 2020 remake of “Road House,” which starred Jake Gyllenhaal and became Amazon MGM’s most-watched film for a while.
Apart from collaborating with Tom Cruise, Liman has also directed highly acclaimed films such as the 2014 sci-fi movie “The Edge of Tomorrow” and “American Made”. Currently, he’s working on a project titled “Deeper”, which is an underwater supernatural thriller. This film is intended to star both Cruise and Ana de Armas.
50 years on, I’m still a go-to name in Hollywood’s literary realm, with my works consistently being adapted for the big screen. This year, we’ve seen Neon’s take on ‘The Monkey’, penned by Osgood Perkins, and ‘The Life of Chuck’, masterminded by Mike Flanagan. As the fall arrives, Lionsgate presents ‘The Long Walk’, followed closely by a fresh rendition of ‘The Running Man’, directed by Edgar Wright for Paramount. And that’s just scratching the surface when it comes to TV adaptations too!
Liman is represented by Creative Artists Agency (CAA) and Weintraub Tobin, while King is managed by Rand Holston and Gang Tyre.
