As a long-time fan of BioWare’s masterpieces, I find myself at a crossroads with the latest offering, Dragon Age: The Veilguard. On one hand, I’m thrilled to see a new action RPG from the studio that brought us classics like Mass Effect and Dragon Age: Inquisition. On the other, as a 15-year veteran of the franchise, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment at the lack of depth in roleplay options and the somewhat underwhelming combat.
Story Highlights
- Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a brand-new action RPG by iconic developer BioWare.
- The developer studio confirms that the game will receive no added DLC over the course of its release.
- BioWare instead wants to focus on the development of Mass Effect 5, the next iteration in the Mass Effect series.
In more casual terms: Dragon Age: The Veilguard is creating quite a buzz in the role-playing game (RPG) world, having been released on contemporary platforms recently. It’s received a warm welcome upon release, though it might not have been exactly what diehard fans of the franchise had hoped for regarding the next Dragon Age installment. Nevertheless, The Veilguard seems to be effectively rebooting the series.
Contrarily, if you’re hoping for fresh Dragon Age content in the near future, I would advise against it. Instead, BioWare is directing its efforts towards a long-standing project —Mass Effect 5. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, John Epler, Creative Director of The Veilguard, has verified this, expressing that BioWare has gained valuable insights from past experiences.
From my perspective as a gamer, it’s fascinating to ponder over the possibility that BioWare could experiment with introducing multiplayer functionality into The Veilguard. If we look at Final Fantasy 16 as an example, they’ve truly mastered the art of seamlessly integrating this feature into their gameplay.
It’s possible to tell a strong story in a multiplayer game. Final Fantasy XIV does an excellent job. Multiplayer also introduces some complications around world states. I make a giant choice in my world, and the world changes. It’s funny, because the games I play the most on my personal time are actually multiplayer games. But when it comes to crafting these worlds and crafting the experiences, I love the focus that single-player can give you,” says Epler.
Fans Spell Concern Over The Future Of The Mass Effect Franchise
In terms of evaluation without considering Dragon Age’s historical impact, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is generally acceptable but not exceptional. It boasts a wealth of content, appealing visuals, and an engaging narrative. However, it falls short in providing substantial roleplay opportunities and delivering satisfying combat mechanics. This weakness has significantly tarnished the game’s overall impression for many RPG enthusiasts, resulting in largely negative feedback.

Should BioWare manage to learn from the response to The Veilguard and incorporate those insights into the creation process of Mass Effect 5, I believe we’re on a solid path. However, that is quite an assumption, as it depends heavily on their ability to do so.
The game “Dragon Age: The Veilguard” was officially released on October 31, 2024, and is available to play on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, as well as personal computers.
