At GDC 2025, LightSpeed Studios unveiled that they are creating a fresh action title under the leadership of Hideaki Itsuno, who has previously worked on games like “Devil May Cry 5” and “Dragon’s Dogma 2”. This project falls under LightSpeed Studios’ broader plan, known as the “Original IP Initiative”, aimed at launching new series. In this endeavor, Itsuno will collaborate with LightSpeed Japan Studio to produce an AAA-quality action game.
So far, no specifics about the upcoming game – not even its name – have been disclosed. However, Itsuno has hinted at an innovative gaming experience that will leave players exclaiming, “I’ve never seen this in a game before!” The game is expected to showcase unique experiences that leverage advanced technology.
In a statement, Itsuno explained, “We’re constructing an imaginative setting where various cultural viewpoints intertwine with state-of-the-art technology. Our primary goal is to design gameplay features that provide players with unique and unprecedented experiences – innovations so fresh and exciting, players will exclaim, ‘I’ve never encountered anything like this in a game!’
In addition to this update, it was mentioned that Lightspeed Studios’ Vice President, Steve Martin, highlighted the company’s robustness due to its diverse team of developers boasting extensive backgrounds. To clarify, these experienced developers have previously contributed to hit games from studios like Rockstar, Naughty Dog, Obsidian, and Sony Santa Monica.
Martin expressed in a statement, “Every developer yearns for the opportunity to create unique games.” He emphasized that the appeal lies in crafting your own stories and characters from the ground up, constructing captivating narratives, and experiencing the burst of creativity and inspiration this process brings. This is the dream of every creative mind, which is why LightSpeed Studios stands out as an exceptional choice.
In January, Itsuno revealed he was moving to LightSpeed Studios. At that time, he mentioned that they had already started working on a new project, eagerly anticipating an official reveal for the game. It’s been about half a year since Itsuno left Capcom in August 2024 and joined LightSpeed Studios.
During his extended period with Capcom, Itsuno’s final significant project was the development of Dragon’s Dogma 2. He also contributed to other key games within the series such as Devil May Cry 3, 4, and 5. In his over three decades at Capcom, Itsuno was involved in numerous titles, including Star Gladiator and Rival Schools: United by Fate.
In addition to their current project with Itsuno, LightSpeed Studios has been concurrently developing an open-world narrative game called “Last Sentinel.” This game is set in a future version of Tokyo, and the development of “Last Sentinel” is being overseen by Martin, who has experience working on popular open-world series like Grand Theft Auto (GTA) and Red Dead Redemption.
The game titled “Last Sentinel” is being constructed utilizing Unreal Engine 5, and it allows players to assume the role of Hiromi Shoda. As of now, not many specifics have been disclosed, as its announcement trailer mainly focuses on narrative rather than actual gameplay. Nevertheless, it has been confirmed that the main character will be a peacekeeper. The intriguing aspect is that the challenges Hiromi faces as a peacekeeper may collide with the central narrative of the game, but the exact details remain unclear for now.
