‘Dragon’s Lair’: James Bobin in Talks to Direct Video Game Adaptation for Ryan Reynolds, Netflix

James Bobin is going from singing green frogs to fire-breathing green dragons.

Discussions are underway with the director behind Disney’s “The Muppets” and “Muppets Most Wanted” movies to take on the adaptation of Netflix’s “Dragon’s Lair,” an iconic arcade game from the 1980s, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In this version, the sentence structure is simplified, and the words chosen are easy to understand for a general audience.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be both starring in and producing a new project, which was initially planned back in 2020! Alongside me, Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment is producing, as well as Trevor Engelson of Underground Films. Don Bluth, Gary Goldman, and Jon Pomeroy are also on board as producers for this exciting venture.

At one point, Dragon’s Lair was America’s most sought-after game. This iconic title burst onto the scene in 1983, aiming to transform the arcade industry by employing movie-like animation from Bluth, a visionary who later directed hit animated films like An American Tail and All Dogs Go to Heaven. The game’s groundbreaking technology utilized LaserDisc to progress the story, but unfortunately, neither the tech nor its visual style could sustain their popularity beyond a specific era. Nevertheless, they are cherished by a particular group of gamers, and even made an appearance in the Netflix series Stranger Things, set in the 1980s.

In this game, the story revolves around a brave knight called Sir Daring Dirk, who embarks on a mission to save the beautiful Princess Daphne from the grip of the sinister dragon, Singe, and the sorcerer, Mordroc.

The style appears suitable for Bobin, as he skillfully blended humor, puppetry, music, and emotion in the 2011 revival of The Muppets following his success with the comedy show “Flight of the Conchords”.

In 2019, he was the one who directed the adventure film titled “Dora and the Lost City of Gold”, and later delved into whimsical storytelling and family fantasy through episodes of Disney’s series “The Mysterious Benedict Society” and “Percy Jackson and the Olympians”.

The InSneider first broke the news of Bobin’s involvement.
