As a gamer with a heart for social justice, I can’t help but feel inspired by Dua Lipa’s unwavering support for The Trevor Project. Her commitment to mental health awareness and advocacy for LGBTQ+ youth is truly commendable. It’s not every day we see a global superstar using her platform so effectively to make a real difference in people’s lives.
Dua Lipa‘s ties to The Trevor Project are growing stronger.
The renowned vocalist has been selected to receive the Mental Health Champion of the Year Award from the organization. This award is given to prominent individuals who utilize their influence to promote mental health awareness and concerns affecting young people within the LGBTQ+ community, as stated by The Trevor Project. She becomes the fourth recipient in this category, joining a list that already includes Lil Nas X, Janelle Monáe, and Dylan Mulvaney.
Lipa’s connection with The Trevor Project – an American and Mexican suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ+ youth – is evident through various actions. She devoted a segment on NBC’s Today show to highlighting the org and its fundraising initiatives, and also shared a link to their crisis services with her almost 88 million Instagram followers shortly after the election.
I feel deeply connected to The Trevor Project, an organization that focuses on mental health awareness for LGBTQ+ youth. It’s a privilege to contribute in any way I can. You are an inspiring, resilient group, and your bravery in embracing your identities never fails to impress me.
According to Jaymes Black from The Trevor Project, “Dua Lipa’s vocal advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and her openness about her own mental health issues make her a perfect choice for this year’s award. Dua serves as a great role model for how allies can leverage their influence to highlight the struggles faced by the LGBTQ+ community, such as obtaining culturally sensitive mental health care. At this time, it’s particularly important that LGBTQ+ youth feel secure and encouraged in their mental health journeys.
