Bill Maher has carved out a unique space in liberal comedy circles.
A number of his associates seldom call out Democrats for their actions, instead they often cheer them on and contribute financially to their campaigns.
Not Maher.
He continues to speak freely, and it appears he’s prepared to criticize California Democrats for potentially exacerbating the devastating wildfires.
Much, much worse.

As a devoted fan, I couldn’t help but feel thrilled when Bill Maher playfully hinted at his “Real Time” comeback on TMZ this week, sharing a sneak peek of his opening monologue focusing on the devastating California wildfires.
The comic pointed out the inconsistency of liberals criticizing others for politicizing tragedies, only to do so themselves when responding to conservative comments following mass shootings.
Maher didn’t stop there.
Indeed, global warming exacerbated the situation, as claimed by Maher. Additionally, poor leadership has played a role, and unfortunately, these inept leaders have predominantly been from the Democratic Party. There’s growing momentum to remove both Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom from their positions.
It’s possible that Maher could approve both proposals. His reason being, he believes that California’s extremely liberal political climate has contributed to the ongoing crisis.
“Did it impede [containment efforts] to some degree? Absolutely,” Maher said.

As a devoted cinephile, I found myself embroiled in a legendary struggle against the intricate web of California bureaucracy, all while aspiring to construct a humble shed on my own land for solar energy panels. In an attempt to expose the lethargy of local authorities and expedite progress, I made it public knowledge about this ongoing battle, hoping that the shame it brought upon them would prompt action.
That’s a luxury most homeowners don’t have.
Learning from that encounter showed him just how complex bureaucracy can get in California, which isn’t a great sign for restoring the greater Los Angeles region. Adam Carolla and Andrew Schulz have echoed similar worries.
In his experience, he found out how intricate the red tape can be in California, which is not promising news for rebuilding the wider LA area. Both Adam Carolla and Andrew Schulz have expressed similar apprehensions.
During the press conference, Mayor Karen Bass mistakenly read out “URL” instead of the actual emergency website for the victims of the fire from her script.

Currently, Mayor Bass has pledged to cut the tapes, but one might wonder, why wasn’t this simple, commonsense action taken before a crisis occurred?
Maher stated, ‘They keep claiming they’ll remove bureaucratic hurdles, as though it’s a kindness. If you can eliminate these hurdles now, why can’t you do so always? It’s not a favor to us…why must we endure this red tape ordeal the rest of the year when things aren’t urgent?’
As a fan, I’d like to draw a parallel between Maher’s remarks and Bill Burr’s stance during his appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”. Hailing from Boston, this comedian voiced support for the Democrats and asserted that the ongoing blame game we see is completely misguided.
Similar to Maher, Burr has established a unique cultural niche where he leans towards liberal views in most cases, yet doesn’t hesitate to poke fun at the liberal side when appropriate. For proof, simply watch “Paper Tiger”.
He’s a stand-up comic, not a late-night host. Still, Burr’s candor is appreciated.
Recently, it seems he might be shifting more towards liberal views. Initially, his 2024 Netflix comedy “Old Dads” appeared to be a jab at progressive ideologies, but surprisingly, it concluded with a final act promoting progressive values.
Now, he’s joining Jimmy Kimmel to bail California Democrats out of a jam of their own creation.
Kimmel vented his frustration towards President-Elect Donald Trump, who was unrelated to the fierce blazes. Interestingly, he’d been urging local authorities to enhance their preparations for exactly this kind of disaster situation.
Burr took Kimmel’s baton, attacking those who say Democrats mismanaged the crisis.
Incompetent, as if someone with no experience could handle the most devastating fire in Los Angeles? Seemingly idle, lounging about in casual clothing.
A group of individuals, referred to here as “those who acted foolishly,” conducted investigations and learned about the depleted water storage facilities, along with other distressing behaviors, which significantly aggravated the severity of the crisis.
Burr doubled down on ignorance.
I appreciate the buzz surrounding discussions about prohibiting illegal immigration and the issue of homeless individuals starting fires.
Homeless people do light fires that spin out of control. That’s not unhinged rhetoric.
In 2023, City Journal highlighted that the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) allocated around $427 million out of its total budget of $854 million towards fires linked to homelessness; it’s worth noting that a study by the Los Angeles Times in 2021 revealed that over half of all fires LAFD attended were related to homelessness.
An illegal immigrant is a suspect in an arson case tied to the current fires.
I firmly believe that the most effective satire stems from truth. Bill Maher’s commentary, for instance, is grounded in ideology and factual evidence. As for W. Kamau Bell’s outburst, I can see it’s more about passionately expressing opinions based on a solid foundation of knowledge.
Not so much.
This weekend, I’ll be diving into some raw truths on “Real Time.” Joining me will be none other than Rick Caruso, the former LA mayoral candidate who made headlines last year after his loss to Karen Bass. We’ll be discussing the ongoing wildfires that continue to pose a significant challenge for our city.
Let’s hope Burr goes on “Real Time” soon. It might make for a fascinating debate.
“Real Time with Bill Maher” returns at 11 am ET Jan. 17 on HBO.
