Duke University Slams HBO’s ‘The White Lotus’ Over Controversial T-Shirt Scene

The current season of the highly acclaimed TV series “The White Lotus” has been met with some criticism following a recent episode. Every Sunday evening, this show on HBO seems to spark conversation among viewers, but in Season 3, Episode 5, there was a scene that has drawn the attention of Duke University. The character in question wore a shirt displaying the university’s branding while exhibiting suspicious intentions. As a result, Duke University has expressed its disapproval of the show.

He appears to be imagining shooting his wife Victoria as well.

Frank Tramble serves as a representative for Duke University. In his role, he holds the position of Vice President for Communication, Marketing, and Public Relations, and recently, he issued an official announcement on behalf of the esteemed institution with the following content:

The White Lotus is using our brand without asking us, and in our opinion, they’re using it in a way that’s disturbing, doesn’t align with our values or our identity. Suicide is the second most common cause of death among college students. Since the show’s images are being shared extensively on social media, we’re leveraging our brand to spread awareness about mental health and let people know that help is accessible.

Duke values artistic creativity and compelling narratives, however, using characters adorned with merchandise that bears Duke’s officially registered trademarks can lead to misunderstandings, giving the false impression of endorsement or association when there is none.

In the third season of “The White Lotus,” a group of affluent Americans are whisked away to a tranquil wellness retreat in Thailand, which is part of a hotel chain notorious for harboring misfortunes. The star-studded cast includes Walton Goggins, Parker Posey, Jason Isaacs, Michelle Monaghan, Carrie Coon, Leslie Bibb, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Natasha Rothwell, Aimee Lou Wood, Sam Nivola, Sarah Catherine Hook and Jon Gries, among others. Each episode is penned and guided by the show’s creator, Mike White.

Does ‘The White Lotus’ Season 3 Match the Previous Seasons?

Despite a slight dip in popularity compared to its initial two seasons, the third installment of “The White Lotus” set in Thailand retains an intriguing twist on its original concept. Family relationships become tangled and complex, while hidden pasts and unexpressed emotions remain central themes in this resort-based narrative. Trouble is brewing ahead.

In the remaining two episodes of Season 3, we’re anticipating some form of turbulent incident, but it remains unclear if this event will surpass the dramatic endings seen in previous seasons of “The White Lotus”. Interestingly, following Episode 6, there’s a sense of tranquility, which seems fitting for the Thailand branch of the resort. Here’s hoping chaos unfolds during next Sunday’s broadcast.
