Sadly, it’s been nearly a year since its theater release, leaving viewers with only Blu-ray or streaming options to enjoy the movie. However, these versions omit significant portions of the film, denying viewers the complete Dune: Part Two experience.

What’s Missing in the Home Release of ‘Dune: Part Two’?

In IMAX theaters, where Dune: Part Two was originally meant to be viewed, the movie was captured with specialized cameras. The films shot for IMAX are typically taller than regular movies due to their use of 70mm film, which is approximately ten times larger than standard 35mm film. Upon its release in IMAX cinemas, Dune: Part Two had an aspect ratio of either 1.43:1 or 1.90:1, varying based on the projector utilized at each theater. Contrastingly, the home video and streaming versions of Dune: Part Two present the entire film with a 2.39:1 aspect ratio, which is consistent with the standard projection ratio for this movie.

Most Blu-ray releases often follow a 2.39:1 aspect ratio, which is common, but this format trims off the top and bottom of the image from IMAX releases due to its wider shape. Despite 2.39:1 appearing larger than 1.43:1 (a more square-like ratio), the former is actually shorter when displayed on a TV screen because it doesn’t fill the entire frame, leaving black bars at the top and bottom. Some films like “The Dark Knight,” initially shot for IMAX, have been adjusted to fit the full TV screen in their home releases, but this isn’t the case for “Dune: Part Two.”

Viewers watching the home release of Dune: Part Two miss out on approximately 40% of each frame compared to the IMAX version, as only three-fourths of their television screens are utilized in the home release.

‘Dune: Part Two’ Deserves to Be Seen in the Best Format Possible

In a contemporary science fiction setting, “Dune: Part Two” stands as an epic masterpiece. Director Denis Villeneuve and his crew went the extra mile by employing IMAX cameras throughout the production, which are not only larger and heavier than regular cameras, but also offer a more immersive visual experience. To further enhance this, significant portions of the film were shot in real deserts, indicating the filmmakers’ commitment to delivering breathtaking visuals on the big screen.

At the 2025 Academy Awards, the film “Dune: Part Two” has been nominated for five awards. Three of these nominations are for achievements related to the visual aspects of the movie: Best Achievement in Visual Effects, Best Achievement in Cinematography, and Best Achievement in Production Design. To truly appreciate these visually stunning Oscar-nominated elements, it’s best to watch the film on an IMAX screen. The remaining two nominations are for Best Picture and Best Sound, with the sound category particularly benefiting from the powerful speaker system found in IMAX theaters to fully grasp its immersive influence.

Regrettably, since there are no other options at the moment, it looks like we’ll have to make do with the home versions of Dune: Part Two, despite their imperfections, as they offer the easiest means to watch the movie.
