‘Dune’ VFX House DNEG Makes Major Move Into AI, Unveils Deal to Buy Metaphysic

The visual effects powerhouse, DNEG Group (responsible for Dune’s VFX) along with its subdivision, Brahma, have taken a major step by purchasing Metaphysic, a company specializing in the development of AI-driven technologies for content creation.

The financial specifics of the arrangement were not revealed, however, it was stated that United Al Saqer Group from Abu Dhabi, alongside DNEG Group, are planning to inject an additional $25 million into Brahma, a firm specializing in AI and content technologies that was initiated by DNEG Group. Furthermore, upon the completion of the transaction, Thomas Graham, who currently serves as CEO of Metaphysic and president of Brahma, will assume the position of CEO at Brahma.

Brahma provides businesses with a plan for creating AI content using generative technology, taking control of their data and delivering personalized AI content across various formats like videos, images, and audio, according to Graham’s statement about the acquisition deal for his company, made on Tuesday. In 2023, Metaphysic garnered attention with a TikTok account that mimicked Tom Cruise using deepfake technology.

The tech company’s innovative AI-powered tool, known as Metaphysic Live, has been utilized in real-time de-aging of actors on screen. For instance, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright appeared younger in the Robert Zemeckis movie “Here” through face replacement technology. Besides “Here”, Metaphysic’s AI digital likeness tools have also contributed to projects like “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “Alien: Romulus” within Hollywood.

The purchase of Metaphysic is set to boost Brahma’s efforts in developing AI technology to generate lifelike videos, photos, and sound for high-quality Hollywood productions. Following this deal, Brahma will have an estimated value of $1.43 billion.

In July 2024, DNEG, a prominent visual effects and animation studio based in London, known for winning Oscars with projects like Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” and Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” announced it had received a $200 million investment from the United Al Saqar Group, headquartered in Abu Dhabi. This investment is intended to strengthen DNEG’s efforts in innovating AI technology within the entertainment industry.

Investors with a metaphysical leaning, such as the well-known cryptocurrency entrepreneurs Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, YouTube personality Logan Paul, global telecommunications company Liberty Global, and venture capital fund S32, will have the opportunity to own shares in Brahma.

Prabhu Narasimhan, executive chairman of Brahma, announced on Tuesday that they will be combining DNEG’s award-winning visual effects and animation software with advanced AI technology to develop a range of AI content products. These include what they anticipate will be the top photorealistic AI video creator in the industry. Narasimhan expressed his enthusiasm about expanding Brahma from serving a specialized user base in high-end film and television production to various industries, stating that with their tools, creators who possess a vivid imagination and a compelling story can now bring their ideas to life more efficiently, affordably, and effectively.

DNEG Group aims to delve further into crafting digital human and character simulations as part of an effort to make expensive visual effects more accessible in Hollywood film production using AI technology. According to Namit Malhotra, founder and CEO of DNEG Group and interim CEO of Brahma, the acquisition of Metaphysic will enable them to generate “exceptional content on a scale and quality that is only accessible to those with substantial budgets at present.” By doing so, Brahma intends to revolutionize storytelling through a platform specifically designed for future content creation.
