The fashion house Jean Paul Gaultier, previously owned by Puig, has announced Duran Lantink as its new creative director, marking an end to the collaborative phase that began when Mr. Gaultier stepped away from the brand in 2020. During this period, the brand showcased diverse designer perspectives on the JPG label through various designers such as Glenn Martens, Haider Ackermann, Nicolas di Felice, and Simone Rocha, who each presented their unique interpretations of the Jean Paul Gaultier collections.
In recent times, there’s been a surge in interest for the JPG brand among younger generations, even though it discontinued its ready-to-wear collection in 2014. Despite this hiatus, the brand remains an inspiration due to its exclusive haute couture shows over the past decade. These high fashion presentations enable the brand to preserve the eccentric and dramatic silhouettes that were a hallmark of its founding designers. Through partnerships with influential figures like Lotta Volkova and Shayne Oliver, Jean Paul Gaultier has successfully reintroduced its ready-to-wear line.
Lantink’s appointment marks him as the first permanent creative director for Jean Paul Gaultier since his departure, bringing fresh ideas to the fashion house following his training at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam. Before establishing his brand, he transitioned from traditional tailoring to repurposing deadstock and existing fabrics and garments, giving them new life by creating innovative hybrid silhouettes. His big break came in 2018 when he designed the “vagina” trousers for Janelle Monae in her “PYNK” music video. Recognized by the British Council and awarded the Andam Fashion Award, the 2025 Woolmark Prize, and LVMH’s 2024 Karl Lagerfeld prize, Lantink made his mark on the Paris RTW calendar with his brand in October 2023. His latest Fall/Winter 2025 show gained widespread attention with a viral latex top that sparked conversation online.
Under the endorsement from none other than Mr. Gaultier himself, who labeled Lantink as the “new ‘enfant terrible'” of fashion, Lantink expresses his delight at being appointed Creative Director. He views Jean Paul Gaultier as a trailblazer and an integral part of a generation that shattered barriers, allowing individuals like him to express themselves freely without reservation. In his eyes, Gaultier embodies the epitome of a creative house, characterized by its boundary-pushing nature and provocation. This iconic brand is at the forefront of fashion, initiating cultural shifts in the way we perceive clothing and wear it on the streets.
On September 25, Duran Lantink’s inaugural ready-to-wear collection for Jean Paul Gaultier will make its grand appearance at Paris Fashion Week, while his first high fashion line is set to debut on January 2026.
