As a seasoned moviegoer with over three decades of attending cinema screenings under my belt, I must say that the recent fiasco surrounding Dwayne Johnson and his latest film, “Red One,” has left me both amused and somewhat disheartened.
Previously this year, an article from The Wrap highlighted some on-set conduct by Dwayne Johnson during filming of his upcoming Christmas action movie named “Red One”. The report alleged that Johnson often arrived late and used a Voss water bottle to relieve himself instead of taking breaks, thereby minimizing production interruptions. This practice supposedly led the film’s budget to escalate beyond $250 million. Now, over half a year later, Johnson is publicly addressing these allegations for the first time.
In an interview with GQ for their cover story about his life and career, including the release of Red One on November 15, Johnson strongly refuted claims that he was frequently late by up to seven to eight hours. While he acknowledged occasional tardiness, Johnson emphasized that it wasn’t to such a great extent, stating, “That was an absurd amount. That’s crazy. Ridiculous.
Regarding the stories that he often uses water bottles instead of visiting public bathrooms, Johnson confirms these accounts as true and is not hesitant to acknowledge this habit.
Indeed, that situation arises frequently… I’ve repeated it countless times: ‘Feel free to approach me whenever you need. I’ll always provide you with honest answers.’
Chris Evans and Red One Director Come to Johnson’s Defense
In the movie titled “Red One“, we follow Johnson as Callum Drift, as he and his team, E.L.F. (Extremely Large and Formidable), work tirelessly to save Santa Claus, portrayed by J.K. Simmons, from a gang of kidnappers. If they fail, Christmas might be spoiled for everyone! This high-octane adventure is skillfully directed by Jake Kasdan, and boasts Chris Evans as Jack O’Malley, a hacker and bounty hunter who teams up with Johnson to locate the one and only Santa Nick.
For Evans, Johnson’s behavior on the set of “Red One” was relatively standard, especially considering some other productions he’s been part of. In comparison to certain actors who not only disregard others’ time and efforts but are also unpredictable, Evans found Dwayne to be quite predictable in his actions. He explained this to GQ, saying, “I knew exactly what he would do, and when.” Regarding the claims about Johnson being late for set, Evans added his perspective.
He occasionally arrives a bit past his scheduled time, but this isn’t an unexpected occurrence or what most people would call late. In fact, this slight delay is already accounted for in our plans, so he consistently arrives when expected according to the schedule everyone is aware of.
In this case,
“He has a lot going on. He can be late sometimes, but such is Hollywood — that’s the case with everybody. Honestly, I’ve made three big movies with him. I’ve never seen him be anything but great to every single person on the set.”
So far, responses to “Red One” have been quite divisive. Some, like Julian Roman from MovieWeb, found it an enjoyable blend of Christmas action and comedy, calling it “a surprisingly clever effort.” On the other hand, Rebecca Johnson didn’t hold back in her criticism, labeling it as “one of the worst films I have ever seen.” Given that Johnson’s latest project is projected to earn between $20 – $40 million during its opening weekend, it faces a significant hurdle in recouping its substantial budget. At this point, it seems unlikely that it will manage such a feat, which could result in “Red One” becoming one of the biggest flops of 2024, despite any notable mishaps.
