As a gamer with a soft spot for Disney movies and a keen interest in behind-the-scenes stories, I find this tussle between Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jack Black over who sang Maui’s song in Moana utterly amusing!
The sequel to “Moana” has become an enormous success at the box office, delighting many. This is undoubtedly good news for stars like Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, but it likely also brings joy to Jack Black, who, as reported by his “Jumanji” co-star, is a dedicated fan of the original film.
In a chat with MTV, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson was queried about which of his co-stars was most like the enthusiastic Moana fans from the movie Moana 2, whom you might recall were voiced by Johnson’s own daughters. It appears that Jack Black watched Moana during their work on Jumanji, and after catching it during its opening weekend, he couldn’t stop raving about it. Johnson went on to reveal…
In my opinion, I believe Jack Black might be the most enthusiastic fan of Moana. Indeed, during the filming of Jumanji, Moana was released, and we were right here in Hawaii, shooting Jumanji. Over the weekend, he went to see the movie, and on Monday morning, he came to work buzzing about it, praising the movie non-stop. I responded with a heartfelt thanks for his kind words.
Johnson delighted in Jack Black extolling the virtues of the film Moana. He was particularly enamored with Maui’s song, “You’re Welcome,” in the movie. However, Black seemed to believe that his compliments were better suited elsewhere, and he wasn’t really acknowledging the songwriting prowess of Lin-Manuel Miranda. It appears that Black mistakenly thought Johnson didn’t perform his own singing in the film, which The Rock found less than flattering. Johnson responded…
And he goes, ‘That song you sang!’ I said, ‘Yeah, You’re Welcome, right?’ He goes, ‘Yeah, awesome.’ I was like, ‘Thank you, man.’ He goes, ‘Who sang it?’ Like, ‘What do you mean?’ He’s like ‘Well who sang that song?’ I said, ‘I did.’ He goes ‘You didn’t sing that. Who was the voice actor who sang that?’ I said, ‘Hey bitch, I did.’
It’s understandable that Jack Black might believe someone else sang “You’re Welcome,” since Dwayne Johnson is not widely recognized as a singer, but he does have a good voice for singing when given the opportunity.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve often found it fascinating in Disney movies that different voice actors have sung the songs compared to their regular dialogue roles. For instance, Jasmine from “Aladdin” was voiced by two separate individuals for speaking and singing. Demi Moore didn’t lend her vocals for singing in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”. In the original “Moana”, Temuera Morrison, famously known as Boba Fett, wasn’t the one who sang for the title character’s father; instead, it was Christopher Jackson from “Hamilton” who provided the singing.
It appears that Johnson eventually managed to persuade Black that indeed, the singing voice of Maui belonged to him. Contrastingly, Johnson’s own daughter had spent years being skeptical about her father being Maui.
