Just ask Dylan O’Brien, who had his very own brush with death during an accident on the set of 2018’s while he was performing a stunt. The actor is reflecting on the moment now, and, today, he would prioritize his safety first and trust his instincts when it comes to any concerns he has about doing something that might be dangerous.
Reflecting on the past event during an interview with Men’s Health, O’Brien admitted that the accident changed his approach towards risky situations, particularly when he has safety concerns. At 24 years old at the time of the incident, the actor initially felt it was his role as a younger performer to resist expressing worries about performing potentially hazardous stunts.
“It was a life-changing incident. I’ve approached everything differently, you could say, particularly with regards to standing my ground on set. It’s very commonplace in the culture for young actors to be controlled, and the way they strive to do that is by always being like, ‘Oh, don’t become difficult. Don’t be a pain in the ass. Or are you complaining, are you being difficult?’ Things like that.”

On the set of “Maze Runner”, an incident occurred that required extensive attention. During the movie’s production in Vancouver, an actor participated in a stunt involving being suspended from a harness above a moving vehicle. Unfortunately, things went awry when he was suddenly ejected from the vehicle and collided with another car. This accident left him with a concussion, facial fracture, and multiple cuts. As a result, filming had to be halted so that he could recover. Initially, it was speculated that production would resume within a few weeks; however, it soon became apparent that his injuries were more severe than initially thought. The unfortunate incident took place on March 18, 2016, and filming didn’t recommence until March 6, 2017.
As a cinephile looking back on that unfortunate incident, I can say that it taught me a valuable lesson – never let myself be swayed into thinking I’m being labeled as challenging or difficult just because I express discomfort about something on set. O’Brien learned this the hard way.
Please don’t let them deceive you into believing that I’m being difficult, when in reality, I was a 24-year-old who had legitimate concerns about our approach. Those concerns were dismissed and not respected at the time, and unfortunately, things turned out as they did. From all reports, it seems those actions went unchecked.
