The game Mafia: The Old Country has piqued gamers’ interest by abandoning its traditional open-world format and instead emphasizing its captivating narrative. This change has been generally well-received, given the current market flooded with expansive but often bloated open-world games. However, recent gameplay clips hint that this linear action-adventure might offer a variety of experiences.
Essentially, it’s another typical Mafia game launch, minus the sprawling open-world that tends to slow things down.
2K’s upcoming game has been previewed by IGN’s team, and reactions are varied. The narrative, as expected, was competently delivered, but it seems a bit worn-out. Yet, during gameplay demonstrations, some enthusiasts couldn’t help but feel that the visuals appeared quite outdated.
In Mafia: The Old Country, long-time fans might recognize a resemblance in the gameplay animations due to their similarity with previous installments. Many of the shooting mechanics appear much the same, and stealth abilities seem to recycle familiar animations. Despite this, there’s no sign that the game is pushing the franchise into uncharted territory visually.
For fifty dollars, this linear game may be considered acceptable due to its good graphics and fair gameplay. However, games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, priced the same, provide significantly more content. In fact, even independent titles that cost less than twenty dollars have demonstrated a greater level of innovation compared to this offering.
Next month, I’ll be diving into “Mafia: The Old Country” on current-gen consoles and PC. I’m not sure if what I’m experiencing is just a demo with recycled animations, or if this is the full game we’ll eventually get our hands on.
It seems this new title might follow the typical pattern associated with a Mafia series. While there will undoubtedly be enthusiasts who appreciate the narrative and perhaps the gameplay, critics may not be as enamored as we expect, based on Hangar 13’s current demonstrations. Here’s hoping they have some hidden gems in store to reignite our enthusiasm.
