What is The Day of the Jackal about?
In modern terms, “The Day of the Jackal” is a fresh retelling of Frederick Forsyth’s 1971 novel, showcasing an untraceable hired gun (Academy Award-winner Eddie Redymane) who eliminates prominent targets for substantial rewards and then vanishes. However, this lifestyle of utter concealment faces a potential collapse when the Jackal agrees to eliminate Ulle Dag Charles (Khalid Abdalla), a tech mogul whose invention jeopardizes the wealth and power of influential billionaires worldwide. Despite the dangers, the allure of a $100 million payout offers the Jackal the opportunity to retire and enjoy more time with his family at their secluded villa in Cádiz, Spain.
Among the factors that draw me to this role is the fact that I, as an actor, am portraying another actor. Unlike numerous spies or assassins commonly found in this genre, The Jackal exhibits a unique artistic flair. He’s not just learning languages; he’s sculpting prosthetics and meticulously mimicking his targets, immersing himself completely – much like what we, as actors, do. I shared this insight with NBC Insider.
Following the elusive assassin is Bianca Pullman (BAFTA winner Lashana Lynch), an MI6 expert in weapons, driven by a fierce desire to establish her capabilities. Despite persistent objections from her doubting superiors – Osita Halcrow (Chukwudi Iwuji) and Isabel Kirby (Isabel Kirby) – she relentlessly pursues the suspect across Europe. Both the Jackal and Bianca are skilled in the art of manipulation and deceit, causing displeasure for their loved ones due to their cunning tactics.
Lynch commented, ‘There’s a fascinating overlap between acting and taking on various personas and lives.’ He further mused, ‘These two characters have an air of mystery surrounding them, making one question whether they truly know their own identity.’
Ursula Corbero, Charles Dance, Richard Dormer, Eleanor Matsuura, Jonjo O’Neill, Nick Blood, Sule Rimi, and Florisa Kamara complete the principal ensemble. (Money Heist, Game of Thrones, Secret Invasion, The Walking Dead, The Fall, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Andor, Cruella)
The television adaptation of “The Day of the Jackal” was overseen by writer and executive producer Ronan Bennett (known for “Public Enemies”). Brian Kirk directed all 10 episodes, serving also as an executive producer, along with Redmayne. Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant from Carnival Films, Sam Hoyle of Sky Studios, and Sue Naegle were also executive producers. Lynch and Chris Hall served as co-executive producer and producer, respectively. Meanwhile, Forsyth functioned as a consulting producer in the project.
