19th-century timepieces were heavily influenced by styles and sizes that seemed distinctly masculine, but an interesting tidbit: the earliest wristwatches were actually created for women. Abraham-Louis Breguet designed a watch for Queen Caroline Murat of Naples in 1810, which still influences modern designs through its egg-shaped case. Patek Philippe, already recognized for creating pendant watches, crafted a wristwatch for a Hungarian countess in 1870. Queen Victoria preferred secret watches with concealed dials within bracelets, including a Patek Philippe watch given to her in 1851.
Historically, watches appeared to have been primarily designed with men in consideration during the latter part of the 20th century. However, the increasing popularity of unisex styles suggests that women too value functionality over aesthetics, and this fact has not gone unnoticed by watch brands. As Mother’s Day is fast approaching on May 12, a watch can be an excellent gift to show your affection while also acknowledging her unique style. In light of this, we have compiled a list of eight watches, each representing different styles, and priced under $5,000. Ranging from brands like Gucci, Chanel, Cartier, Tudor, Shinola, and Citizen, you will find a watch that suits every woman in your life.
