For dedicated FromSoftware enthusiasts, crafting an optimized character through top-notch stats, weapons, and armor is equally crucial to victory as your gaming proficiency. I’ve invested countless hours fretting over equipment loads, poise levels, and damage per second (DPS), always on the hunt for any edge in a Soulsborne title.
In Elden Ring Nightreign, unlike some games, there’s no need to worry about choosing a character with specific attributes. Instead, you start with eight pre-made characters, or “Nightfarers”, from which to select when embarking on an expedition. You might be curious about which character is the most advantageous to pick as your main character.
The solution can be intricate, mainly due to personal playstyle and the makeup of your entire group being crucial factors for success in the game. However, this doesn’t imply that certain roles won’t gradually emerge as more favorable as you adapt to Nightreign.
If you’re having trouble deciding which Nightfarer to start with initially or if you’d rather jump straight to choosing the top main character, we have a solution for you provided below.
To determine these rankings, we combined my personal Nightfarer preferences with those of two fellow TopMob authors who were reviewing Nightreign. If there was a tie, the Nightfarer favored by at least two out of our three writers emerged as the winner.
8.
Recluse
Too Much Glass, Not Enough Cannon

Every character in Nightreign’s Nightfarer group can excel given the right use, but Recluse is perhaps the hardest to master due to her complexities. Moreover, she has the least initial HP and not the best Stamina among them. However, she compensates with a high FP score, which aligns with her role of constantly casting magic spells.
Her spells serve a dual function: saving teammates from the brink of death at a distance, and dealing significant damage to enemies when used strategically with her FP (Focus Points). However, her steep learning curve and high susceptibility to damage in combat make her less favorable compared to other classes.
Her unique ability, Magic Cocktail, has the power to address any kind of damage in the game, making it ideal for exposing enemy vulnerabilities. However, obtaining the specific affinities required can be a bit more labor-intensive, involving some additional effort and item gathering. Her ultimate move, Soulblood Song, imbues enemies with a sigil that amplifies their damage output while simultaneously restoring the health of her party, much like Mohg’s signature style.
All three of us that participated in our character ranking poll put Recluse last.
7.
Raider
Slow, But Steady

Raider might not be the most versatile option, but he excels in certain areas. Specifically, his HP and Stamina are exceptionally high, making him one of the top two tanks in the game. If you prefer to be in the thick of things, then Raider could be your ideal character.
In games like Nightreign where combat can be tough, fighting bosses up close is risky due to their high damage potential. This means that the additional HP (health points) you have will certainly be tested. Moreover, he seems to favor large/bulky weapons, which work well for quickly eliminating lower-level enemies or whittling down a boss’s health. However, in the fast-paced world of Nightreign, these weapons might leave you feeling sluggish as speed is more emphasized.
He possesses an advantageous trait: additional stability during his special moves, making it impossible for him to be interrupted after initiating his wind-ups. His move, Retaliate, can unbalance enemies, and his ultimate ability, Totem Stela, can inflict significant damage if used effectively.
Nevertheless, the stone column summoned by Totem Stela may occasionally position foes in uncomfortable spots or simply obstruct them, even though it also serves as a shield to block incoming enemy missiles.
One of our team’s writers is particularly fond of Raiders and often plays him as their main character. However, the other two members of our team collectively rated Raiders seventh place in overall rankings, even though they acknowledge his charm and appeal.
6.
Guardian
Climbing The Pecking Order

Although Raider seems to be the character with the most health and endurance in the game, it’s actually Guardian who earns
Primarily wielding Halberds or other extended weapons, the Guardian boasts a considerable reach and inflicts significant damage. This makes him an ideal choice for consistent melee damage output, along with his towering HP count. Additionally, he possesses a commendable defensive passive ability called Steel Guard, making him one of the most durable characters to survive in battles.
Swiftly sweeping up lesser foes and propelling them skyward before slamming them back down in a disarrayed pile, Whirlwind is exceptional at this task. Among the game’s ultimate abilities, Wings Of Salvation is often overlooked but packs quite a punch. Not only does it inflict substantial damage on any adversary within its area of effect, but it also miraculously resuscitates any comrades teetering on the brink of death in an instant.
Despite the Guardian being placed relatively lower within our collective assessment, I personally found him to be my preferred character. If you prioritize survivability, melee combat, and team support, I encourage you not to dismiss the Guardian based on his #6 ranking. This character has the potential to truly shine.
5.
Duchess
Take That, Rewind It Back

The Duchess character isn’t initially accessible at the start of the game, but you’ll gain access to her following your victory over the first Nightlord, Gladius. In terms of health (HP) and stamina, she starts off with average to low values, which might make her a bit challenging for players who are not very experienced.
Despite some limitations, she can be incredibly fun when utilized effectively. She’s a swift assault specialist, particularly proficient with short blades like daggers. However, this also implies that you may need to position yourself strategically closer to the battlefield because of her relatively shorter reach. Her ultimate ability, Finale, conceals her and any nearby teammate, providing an opportunity for quick escapes or surprise attacks on opponents.
To put it simply, what makes her unique among our previous suggestions is her special skill, Restage. When activated, Restage conjures a spectral version of any character who has taken damage from an enemy recently, and then redirects those attacks towards the enemy, although with slightly reduced overall damage. This ability cools down rapidly, allowing for frequent use and maximum impact.
4.
Wylder
Grappling With It

In simpler terms, Wylder is the character you initially play with during the game’s introduction, who also appears on the cover art. Given this, it seems reasonable to consider him as a balanced, versatile class. He boasts high Health Points (HP), decent Stamina, and slightly lower Firepower Points (FP), but this doesn’t significantly impact his performance.
He predominantly wields bigger swords, and they seem quite intuitive for beginners in the Soulsborne series. He’s quite ordinary, but this isn’t a criticism at all. In fact, it can be a significant advantage, depending on who you consult. His unique trait, Sixth Sense, enables him to evade one fatal strike, which can prove incredibly useful when needed.
Additionally, he possesses a grappling hook due to his character ability called Claw Shot. This tool enables him to draw nearby lighter adversaries closer or navigate swiftly, either to bridge short distances or escape danger. His ultimate move, Onslaught Stake, fires a massive fireball that can dramatically shift the course of a fight in an instant.
3.
Executor
If It Bleeds…

The Executor initially has moderate Health Points (HP) and Stamina, which is sufficient for him to be effective in both areas. He’s a swift character with a focus on dexterity, and he comes equipped with a blade that can cause Bleed accumulation. If you’re like me, the Bleed effect was crucial during your playthrough of the original Elden Ring, so you’re already aware of its importance.
In case you didn’t know, each consecutive attack against an opponent increases a meter called Bleed. Once a certain level of Bleed is reached, the enemy takes significant damage all at once. If you are adept at dodging and can maintain continuous attacks on your opponent, you can trigger Bleed multiple times in one battle, making it easier to defeat a challenging enemy quickly.
His unique ability, Cursed Sword, enables him to draw a hidden blade at his discretion. Unlike any other skill in the game, it doesn’t operate on a cooldown system. Furthermore, it deals additional damage and has the added benefit of allowing him to deflect incoming attacks. Mastering this skill requires effort, but the rewards are substantial.
His extraordinary masterpiece is titled “Aspects of The Crucible: Beast,” which stands out as the most visually bizarre in the game. This transformation will turn Executor into an immense beast, boasting both light and heavy attacks to swiftly decimate enemies and a roar that inflicts chip damage on anything within a certain area.
2.
Revenant
Summon Time Radness

In the game Nightreign, the eighth and last character you’ll obtain is Revenant. She’s worth the patience you’ll need to wait for her because you must first defeat her in battle before you can play as her. This added challenge only adds to her appeal. Upon unlocking her, you might find that her total Health Points (HP) are similar to Recluse’s, but she compensates for it in other areas.
To begin, she wields Cursed Claws that inflict Magic damage, which can be beneficial against specific foes; however, it’s worth noting that Magic isn’t the primary vulnerability of any Nightlord in the game. Yet, given the other abilities that Revenant possesses, this choice proves effective.
She has the ability to frequently conjure a group of spirits who promptly join battles and remain active for an extended period. This additional help in intense boss fights, provided by Revenant, is incredibly beneficial, even bordering on extraordinary. Her ultimate move, Immortal March, also instantly revives an ally close to death, making her an exceptional character for providing support.
1.
Ironeye
No Knocks, Just Nocks

In Nightreign, while Ironeye might not impress with his Health Points (HP) and Fighting Points (FP) combined, and although Stamina is average, don’t be deterred by first impressions. Even though bow and arrow builds are less common among standard Elden Ring players, rest assured that Ironeye excels with a bow in Nightreign.
Ironeye has an endless supply of arrows, enabling him to continuously fire them without worrying about running out, while maintaining a safe distance from his enemies. This constant barrage causes chip damage, although it might not seem significant on its own, but it piles up quickly and can be amplified with affinities to inflict specific types of damage. Additionally, Ironeye is proficient in wielding smaller melee weapons too, so he’s not solely reliant on his bow for combat.
His passive ability, Eagle Eye, enhances the entire team’s vision on the map, making it easier to spot important items at every location. His active skill, Marking, tags an enemy for increased damage from all team members over a specified duration. When activated, his ultimate move, Single Shot, releases a powerful arrow that strikes the designated boss or opponent, inflicting heavy damage.
Incorporate this point too – his knack for resuscitating from Near Death situations by launching arrows at downed allies from afar makes him exceptional, and it’s safe to say that Ironeye is a jack-of-all-trades. However, you need to exercise caution when using him because he doesn’t have as much durability as other characters. Nevertheless, his diverse abilities place him in the top tier, making him an ideal choice for any boss battle.
In essence, having a well-coordinated trio of skilled Ironeyes could be your best bet when playing Nightreign.
As a gamer, let me tell you, my buddy and I couldn’t agree more on Ironeye; we both placed him number one among the eight contenders. That guy is just ridiculously skilled!
