Summary
- Elden Ring Nightreign opens to ‘Mixed’ reviews on Steam.
- The due to lack of duos mode and voice chat has disappointed many players.
- FromSoftware will be adding duos mode post-launch, but no fixed date has been given.
Experience the release of Nightreign, a cooperative spin-off set within the world of Elden Ring by FromSoftware! In this game, you and two companions will delve into the treacherous landscape of Limveld, battling an array of terrifying nightmares. Adopting a rogue-like approach, each venture offers unique challenges. Despite the hype surrounding its player count, Nightreign has received ‘Mixed’ reviews on Steam upon its launch.
The primary cause behind these conflicting opinions appears to be the absence of a duos mode, which many players seem to agree on. Playing a game as an adult can already be challenging due to time constraints, but locating two others who are available at the same time is nearly impractical. This challenge was further exacerbated by the fact that there’s no voice chat, making it agonizing to connect with a random player for matchmaking.
Eden Ring Nightreign Players Complain About Lack Of Duos And Voice Chat

The top-rated negative comment on Steam expressed frustration: “There was no duo option, instead random individuals would join only to leave and do their own thing. I’d rather duo with my friend,” because FromSoftware didn’t include a duos mode. Unfortunately, Nightreign compels you into matchmaking with an additional player. However, without a voice chat function, it’s challenging to synchronize strategies for the tough boss fights.
In a different review, it was stated that playing in the solo queue (matching up with random players) feels dismal because without voice communication, it becomes extremely challenging to decide on where to move, locate loot or items, assist teammates by dropping items for them, and so on. The basic act of moving together as a team is also significantly hindered due to the lack of these features.
As a devoted fan, I’ve been eagerly waiting for news about the duos mode in FromSoftware’s latest release. While they’ve hinted at its post-launch implementation, there’s no clear timeline as of now. It appears that the game isn’t quite ready to accommodate two players just yet, hence the delay in launching it. However, even the solo mode seems to be experiencing balancing issues, making the gameplay a bit challenging for everyone involved.
A different player mentioned, “I’m 41 years old and I don’t have friends who play this game regularly, let alone three. Even if the game adds voice chat (which it doesn’t seem to have at present), you won’t get as much enjoyment from it as you would playing with friends, because your experience is heavily influenced by how well you coordinate with strangers. This can significantly impact your overall feelings about the game.
It’s likely that FromSoftware is developing multiplayer options, possibly including duos mode, or enhancing the game with voice chat. Although the current ping system works well, it can be limiting in a vast world like Nightreign. A verbal communication method would greatly improve the gaming experience.
