Elden Ring Nightreign: The Co-Op Chaos You Didn’t Know You Needed!

Since the 90s, I’ve been engrossed in games from FromSoftware, and they never fail to astonish me with their innovative twists. Starting with the expansive worlds of the King’s Field series, I moved on to the adrenaline-pumping battles of Armored Core, then the enigmatic, free-roaming adventure of Eternal Ring. My journey eventually brought me to the subtle genius of Demon’s Souls. From there, the studio continued to solidify its reputation with Dark Souls and beyond, ultimately leading us to another unusual Elden Ring Nightreign.

In my usual approach, I dive headfirst into FromSoftware games without prior knowledge, and that’s exactly what I did with Nightreign. I didn’t anticipate the drastic change it would bring, mainly due to its unique three-player cooperative system design and the integration of battle royale elements deep within the game’s core structure. What ensued was quite a rollercoaster ride, unabashed in its identity, both positively and negatively.

Nightreign Is Kind Of Like An All-Star Souls Game

It Might Be Your Next Online Obsession

It’s crucial to understand the unique mechanics of Elden Ring Nightreign as it deviates from conventional Souls games. In each round, you’ll be transported into a map with randomly generated landmarks, where you’ll encounter two other players. Throughout your journey, you’ll traverse various locations to acquire gear and level up while avoiding an encroaching ring of fire/death. The final stage is a small central ring where you’ll face a randomly selected boss, marking the end of “Night 1.” You’ll then repeat this process for Night 2 before confronting the Nightlord bosses – the primary adversaries in Elden Ring Nightreign.

Once you’ve defeated four Nightlords, you encounter the game’s final boss. To collect additional permanent items (equivalent to relics or perk gems) and unlockables such as costumes, you may need to repeat your runs. While it is technically feasible to play alone (and experienced Souls players will soon share their solo playthroughs), the game isn’t optimized for single-player experiences. Bosses have vast health pools and deal significant damage, meaning that dying during a large battle ends the entire run. This could discourage solo play, so be aware of this challenge.

In a more straightforward manner, it can be said that Elden Ring Nightreign is optimally enjoyed with a fixed group that uses voice communication (which should ideally be set up externally). The built-in ping system within the game is useful for playing with strangers, but there are situations when you might need to alert a player of an overpowering enemy or instruct your team to bypass a trap and aim for a greater prize. Time is consistently crucial in Nightreign, and almost every second matters. It’s essential to be prepared and equipped for the final boss, as failure to do so could lead to a tough defeat.

Nightreign Can Be Fun Or Frustrating, Depending On The Run

Group Dynamics And RNG Can Influence A Lot

The concept behind it is quite clear. However, in reality, Elden Ring Nightreign stands out as one of the most thrilling and vexing games I’ve encountered this year. When everything aligns perfectly, the experience is delightful. This game offers various Nightfarer class templates (with two more to unlock), such as a versatile all-rounder, a tank, a marksman, a burglar, a summoner, a berserker, a sorceress, and a samurai at the fundamental level. All classes are adaptable and can be fine-tuned, but some are challenging to master, which may influence the gameplay right from the start.

In the game ‘Nightreign’, if a teammate doesn’t revive you, you could lose a level and possibly all your in-game currency. This means that if a player dies, their teammate might need to go back for their souls, risking losing levels and being poorly equipped against the Nightlord. Independent actions can lead to teammates dying, losing progress, and starting or ending a run at a disadvantage. A single run can last up to 45 minutes without time limit on boss fights, so it’s crucial to stay together as a team.

In simpler terms, some of the annoyance comes from technical glitches. Once, when things were going smoothly, I was unexpectedly kicked out of a session during the Night 2 boss fight. The game attempts to reconnect matches after such incidents, but upon reaching the main menu, an “unable to restore session” error message appeared. Fortunately, this only happened once, but it spoiled my gaming experience that day. Additionally, I experienced frame rate problems during battles with Nightlord, a problem that other players in my sessions seemed to encounter as well.

The Highs Of Nightreign Are Very High

When You Get That Perfect Run, It’s A Blast

From moment to moment, it’s simple to overlook how a handful of challenging minutes can bring an end to a journey. Subtle adjustments in the movement mechanics, which contrast from the “Souls” series, have a significant impact. You almost feel like you can dash everywhere at a pace similar to riding a horse in Elden Ring, so to speak. Scattered boost pads cover the ground, enabling players to jump as high as skyscrapers at strategic locations to discover new points of interest. At one instance, I soared into the sky with my whole team, marked something in mid-air, landed, and continued our journey together, all in harmony.

In the game Nightreign, ranged combat is incredibly enjoyable because there’s no need to worry about running out of arrows. Every ranged weapon comes equipped with infinite ammo, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the action without having to manage your inventory. What’s more, each character class brings something unique to the table, and the advanced classes like Duchess and Revenant offer even more distinct abilities. The loadout customization possibilities in this game are truly extensive, enabling players to perform some amazing feats!

The game, Nightreign, became captivating for me when I understood that each match consists of constantly moving around like in an arcade game and fighting various opponents alongside two other players. With careful strategy and familiarity with the game’s mechanics, many of its difficulties can be anticipated and mitigated. The introduction of new map modifications (which occur based on a world tendency-like system as you progress through the game and defeat Nightlords) introduces additional complexities and challenges to solve.

Looking forward to delving into Nightreign in the future, where I can enjoy myself with friends, pick up interesting facts, and swap stories and tactics. The unpredictability of Nightreign is bound to bring about plenty of amusing, spontaneous moments, many of which will be broadcast online. Witnessing a teammate being flung off-screen only to leap back into the fray as the tank class, resuscitating them, is an exhilarating experience. The spirit of camaraderie and cooperation is deeply ingrained in Nightreign, more so than any Souls game preceding it.

Without adequate preparation and repeated practice with the same team, advancement may be painfully gradual. The relic system can be beneficial once you’ve accumulated numerous high-quality gems from multiple attempts, but some have unclear upgrade descriptions or are virtually useless. Occasionally, you might find yourself with a disappointing run that yields nothing despite the roll of the dice.

Nightreign Isn’t For Everyone, But Diehards Will Love it

The More You Play, The More You Learn

Over several decades, I’ve participated in numerous games resembling “All-Star” events, and Elden Ring Nightreign evokes memories of Castlevania: Harmony of Despair from 2010. This classic title was a cherished gem within the series, encapsulated in a cooperative-focused design. Although it didn’t create a massive wave in the gaming industry overall, it had a strong and committed player community that welcomed new players and offered assistance. I foresee the same growth for Elden Ring Nightreign.

In its currently unpolished yet charming form, Elden Ring Nightreign is drawing in numerous players with its captivating melody. Despite the occasional crashes, both metaphorical and literal, most players will maintain smiles on their faces throughout the journey. I’m intrigued to follow this game’s evolution, warts and all, for an extended period.
