The remastered version of “The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion” has left its original creators, now 20 years into RPG development, amazed by its stunning visual upgrades. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, this new edition boasts significantly enhanced graphics, and Bethesda Game Studios and Virtuos have further refined the game’s mechanics, including its leveling system.
In an interview with VideoGamer, original Oblivion creator Bruce Nesmith commended Bethesda Game Studios and Virtuos for their courage in updating the game’s original mechanics for the remastered version. Previously working on Dungeons & Dragons and designing quests and systems for Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyrim, and Starfield, Nesmith believes that the enhancements made to the game systems, particularly addressing the somewhat contentious leveling system, have made the game more accessible to contemporary players. This refinement could potentially boost the game’s popularity.
In the updated version, character advancement strikes a balance between the intricate level-ups of the initial game and the more straightforward progression found in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Previously, players needed to raise their primary skills by a specific number before sleeping, which would then boost their overall level and attribute points based on the growth of their key skills. Now, every skill path provides experience points, allowing players to decide which attributes they want to improve.
I find it quite courageous, and I believe it will significantly boost the popularity of the Oblivion remaster.

In addition to its outdated leveling system, the 2006 original title has faced criticism for its “world scaling” feature. As players progressed in levels, the game world adjusted accordingly, a decision that Naismith deemed as a mistake and remains present in the remaster. Consequently, as you advance in strength, so do the adversaries you encounter. However, this mechanic was revised significantly for Skyrim, resulting in a much more balanced and satisfying gameplay system. Yet, there are already modifications available to rectify this issue.
Naismith shared with us that he played a significant role in designing both systems. He explained that he was responsible for the practical details and mathematical foundations, and he has an intimate understanding of how they function.
As a dedicated gamer, I believe introducing level synchronization in this game was an error, evident by its absence in Skyrim. Instead, we’ve devised a far superior method to maintain player engagement without creating the feeling of “my progress doesn’t matter because the challenges adapt to my level.
Oh, what an exhilarating moment! I’m thrilled to share that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remaster has just been unveiled for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC! And
