Elizabeth Olsen Discusses Scarlet Witch's MCU Future

As a film enthusiast with over two decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that Elizabeth Olsen‘s comments about Marvel Studios’ handling of Scarlet Witch resonate deeply with me. While I have always admired her performance as the powerful and complex Wanda Maximoff, I too felt a bit unsure about the direction they were taking her character after the brilliant yet heart-wrenching finale of “WandaVision.

After wrapping up the Disney+ series “WandaVision,” Elizabeth Olsen disclosed that Marvel Studios were uncertain about the future of her MCU character, the Scarlet Witch. The Scarlet Witch first appeared in the 2015 film “Avengers: Age of Ultron” alongside Quicksilver, portrayed by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, as the secondary antagonists. After the demise of her brother, Wanda joined forces with the Avengers and became a formidable member. However, the darker narrative direction taken in “WandaVision” left Marvel Studios grappling with how to continue the Scarlet Witch’s storyline following the show’s end.

In an interview with FM104 about her upcoming film “His Three Daughters”, Elizabeth Olsen spoke about her experience in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actress expressed that she enjoys portraying her character when it’s written well. Although she didn’t mention a particular project, Olsen hinted that “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” where Wanda Maximoff transforms into the primary antagonist, might not have been the best fit for her character. She stated:

Initially, it seemed like good fortune as I was utilized effectively from the beginning. However, Marvel appeared momentarily uncertain about how to make the best use of me.

The actress who plays Scarlet Witch, Elizabeth Olsen, has expressed her readiness to reprise her role in future Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects. Although neither Olsen nor the character have been officially announced for any upcoming projects, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has hinted that Wanda will make a comeback in the MCU at some point.

I really enjoy revisiting this character whenever there’s an opportunity to utilize her effectively… Whenever there’s a chance to make good use of her, I’m always eager to return.

WandaVision Will Not Get a Second Season

WandaVision, marking Marvel Cinematic Universe’s initial step into television (disregarding Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), boasted a one-of-a-kind structure that would be challenging to replicate in a potential second season. Each installment was crafted as a fictional sitcom from various decades. However, the series deviated from this format in its later episodes once the characters understood they were trapped within a simulated reality created by Wanda. After liberating herself and Westview’s town from her fabricated universe, where she bore children with Vision, an enraged Wanda embarked on a destructive spree in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, fueled by her desperation to reunite with her fantasized offspring.

It’s quite challenging to recreate the storyline of a second season of “WandaVision” given its unique format. It’s also implausible for Wanda to capture another town within her fictional TV universe. However, it’s important to note that there won’t be a second season of “WandaVision“. In an interview with The Direct towards the end of 2023, the director of “WandaVision“, Matt Shakman, has confirmed that no second season is planned.

“I have to disagree, really, because we were crafting a very particular tale with a definite ending; it was a narrative about Wanda dealing with her grief over losing Vision, and we’ve already wrapped that up.

Although the series WandaVision has concluded, its impact persists in the latest Marvel Disney+ production titled Agatha All Along. This spin-off stars Kathryn Hahn once again as Agatha Harkness, who made her debut in WandaVision. In Agatha All Along, Agatha embarks on a mission to regain her powers, which were temporarily taken by Wanda when she absorbed some of her magic.

Agatha All Along
streams on Disney+ on September 18, 2024.
