Elizabeth Olsen on Feeling Pressure to “Prove” Her Personal Film Taste Post Marvel

Elizabeth Olsen admits that her preferred movie choices don’t always match up with the films she’s acted in, specifically the Marvel series.

The actress who portrayed Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for almost a decade, expressed on the NPR’s Wild Card with Rachel Martin podcast that she experiences pressure to demonstrate her artistic judgment regarding the media she engages with.

As a gamer, I often find myself struggling to ensure that the choices I make professionally align with my personal preferences. It’s something I feel I’m constantly trying to demonstrate when I meet new people, especially in a work-related setting. Particularly when it comes to discussing films, literature, and other creative works, I still sense there’s more for me to prove in this regard.

The actor from “Love & Death” added, “Having invested so many years in Marvel, I want my future projects to align closely with my personal preferences since, despite my affection for this universe and the accomplishments I’ve made with the character, it’s not the kind of art that I typically enjoy. I’ve always been candid about this.

Initially, Olsen portrayed her Scarlet Witch character in “Avengers: Age of Ultron” back in 2015. Following this, she made appearances in various Marvel films such as “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018), “Avengers: Endgame” (2019) and most recently, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” (2022). Additionally, her performance in the Disney+ series “WandaVision” (2021) earned her an Emmy nomination for best actress in a limited or anthology series or movie.

Later on, Olsen expressed again that she continues to feel incredibly proud of her collaboration with Marvel. However, when it comes to movie-watching, she prefers titles that fall outside of the superhero film category.

She expressed that she found the stories reminiscent of classic Greek tales, beautifully depicting politics and culture. This made her feel honored to be part of it. More recently, there’s been a trend where actors discuss whether they’d refuse to work on a Marvel production or not.” – The Assessment actress stated.

Despite Elizabeth Olsen expressing her readiness to reprise her role as the Scarlet Witch if there’s a suitable storyline, she declared in March that she won’t feature in the Russo brothers’ upcoming films, “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
