As a long-time fan of Ellen DeGeneres, I must admit that her recent Netflix special, “Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval,” left me feeling a bit disheartened and disappointed. After nearly two decades of tuning into the Ellen DeGeneres Show for its relatable humor and uplifting messages, it’s hard to swallow the bitter pill of this controversial comedy special.
In a natural and easy-to-read manner,
On the other hand, most people seem to find it offensive and distasteful, given that the renowned comedian attempts to joke about her misfortune, portraying herself as a victim in the process.
The Divisive Nature of Ellen DeGeneres on Display in Her Special
Following the disclosure in 2020 about Ellen Degeneres maintaining a hostile work environment, her talk show ratings dropped significantly, and numerous anecdotes emerged that painted a stark contrast between her on-screen persona and her off-screen behavior. The allegations called into question the pristine image she had cultivated as a paragon of kindness, causing a rift in public opinion about her. Before the airing of Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, it was clear that the comedy special would stir controversy. Though there is animosity towards Ellen, for many she remains the symbol of hope and joy they have been watching for nearly 19 years on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, a total of 3,300 episodes.
The Netflix-produced comedy show, starring Ellen, garnered much applause, particularly when she asserted “I am a strong woman,” which received an uninterrupted minute of applause. According to Vulture, there were approximately 12 minutes of clapping throughout the special, excluding the closing. Some viewers found it resembled more of a ‘praise box’ than a comedy special, but those who have stood by Ellen for years view it as an appropriate tribute to her comedic journey. However, it is hard to ignore that the special dealt with the recent controversy in a less-than-satisfactory manner.
Ellen’s Special Tackling Her Controversy Was a Miss
In her latest interview addressing allegations about creating a harmful work environment, which has tarnished her reputation as a talk show host, Ellen humorously comments, “You can’t be unkind and remain in the entertainment industry.” This statement oversimplifies the complex issue and controversy surrounding Ellen DeGeneres over the past few years, during which she was widely known for promoting kindness.
This was blatant hypocrisy, and those frustrated with the host and pushing for her cancelation were only upset she was “mean” because she was preaching something she did not practice. Hollywood has ample actors who are notoriously difficult or intense to work with, but they make it part of their persona; they don’t portray unending kindness and understanding as a means to garner appreciation and then turn around and treat those working for them cruelly. This, along with a general distaste for the special, has been growing online, in the regular corners of the interns, i.e., Reddit.
It appears that a revival of older tweets from Ellen, in which she affectionately called P. Diddy “Cuddle McSnugglestuff,” has sparked some controversy (Daily Mail). This incident might be the least of her worries regarding her public image, as her Netflix special, titled “Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval,” is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
