Ellen Pompeo, the long-time star of “Grey’s Anatomy”, has spoken about feeling unhappy with one significant plotline in the series because Meredith Grey’s decision seemed out of character for her. Over two decades and 21 seasons on this medical drama, Pompeo has portrayed Meredith Grey consistently, even after transitioning from a main cast member. Throughout the show, she has faced numerous challenges, personal hardships, and saved lives of patients, often going against the rules to do so.
Discussing with a distinct tone, Pompeo expressed her disappointment towards the plotline in Grey’s Anatomy season 21. Specifically, she was troubled by the situation where Meredith attempted to secure a liver transplant for Dr. Evynn Moore’s (Lena Waithe) wife, concealing her Alzheimer’s diagnosis. The actress found this storyline problematic because it depicted Meredith revealing crucial information to UNOS and the board, which was inconsistent with her past character.
In some instances, I don’t get to decide the actions of the character. Writers often prioritize the plot first and then ponder if the character they’ve created, like Meredith Grey, would actually make that decision. This season, I found myself strongly disagreeing with a choice Meredith was making.
I found an issue with the storyline because the character of Meredith Grey I envisioned would have reacted differently. She’d likely say something like, “I’m upset you lied, but let’s work together to find a way around this system to get you the liver. The system is flawed. However, in this scenario, Meredith decides, for some unexplained reasons, to be angry, inform on the lie, and report it to UNOS and the board – actions that go against her 20-year history of bending the rules to do what’s right. Meredith has always gone out of her way to perform free surgeries and help people genuinely.
In the end, she conversed with Waithe regarding this matter. It became clear how the narrative served to strengthen Meredith’s romantic relationship with Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman). She emphasizes that expressing her dissatisfaction with the plot stemmed from a place of love for the show and an aspiration to see it reach its full potential as a top-notch series. In simpler terms, Meg Marinis, Debbie, and Shonda all understand that my vocal input about the show’s creative aspects stems from a deep love for the show, as expressed by Pompeo. Essentially, her role is to preserve Shonda Rhimes’ legacy by working diligently and not becoming complacent or lazy in their responsibilities.
What Pompeo’s Sentiments Say About Her Passion For Grey’s Anatomy
She Wants Meredith’s Story To Feel True To Her Character
In the latest storyline of Grey’s Anatomy season 21, Meredith stuck to protocol rather than bending it to save Moore’s wife, avoiding any unnecessary turmoil with the board. Although some might argue that these actions didn’t align perfectly with her character as portrayed by Pompeo, they were crucial steps in developing Meredith’s character journey. Her response to the events of the two-part episode underscores her dedication to accurately depict her character, even when the show’s writers have her making decisions that seem out of character for her.
She’ll continue to have opportunities to shine since the 22nd season of Grey’s Anatomy has already been confirmed, and it’s known that she will feature in seven episodes throughout the new season. This limited but consistent presence ensures her significance within the series, as her character Meredith’s decisions will continue to be relevant to Pompeo, thereby expanding her role in the story in a manner consistent with her established character.
Our Take On Pompeo’s Reaction To Meredith’s Recent Storyline
It Makes Sense She’d Want Her Character To Be Accurate
After playing Meredith for more than two decades, it’s natural for Pompeo to feel strongly when she feels her character isn’t accurately portraying the real her. With her extensive experience as a doctor, she’ll probably provide similar criticism towards future Grey’s Anatomy episodes that don’t stay true to her established persona over time. It remains to be seen whether upcoming stories will continue to reflect who she truly is or lead to changes in the character she has evolved into over the years.
New episodes of Grey’s Anatomy air Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
