Ellen Pompeo Reveals the Shocking Grey’s Anatomy Storyline She Totally Disagreed With!

For a long time, “Grey’s Anatomy” has been one of television’s most beloved shows, but for actress Ellen Pompeo, it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. There have been moments when she wasn’t content with the show’s progression, expressing her displeasure in a constructive manner. She even went as far as to mention an example of a storyline she didn’t want to see unfold.

In recent reflections, Ellen Pompeo, who has been a significant character on “Grey’s Anatomy”, expressed concerns about the show’s writers not always considering what her character, Meredith Grey, would realistically do in certain scenarios. Pompeo criticized a two-episode storyline where Meredith learns that another doctor (Lena Waithe) lied about her wife’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis to keep her eligible for a liver transplant. From Pompeo’s perspective, the writers had Meredith act against what she believed her character should have done in this situation.

In a nutshell, Pompeo shared that he doesn’t always get to decide what choices his character makes on the show. Writers often prioritize the plot over character consistency. He encountered an instance in the latest season where he strongly opposed a decision Meredith Grey was making. His issue with this storyline was that the Meredith Grey he developed would have reacted differently, saying something like, “I’m upset you lied, but let’s find a way to work around the system to get you this liver. The system is flawed.” In essence, Pompeo’s Meredith Grey character would have been more determined to challenge the system rather than accept it.

Pompeo stated, “On the contrary, Meredith decides, for some unknown reason, to become angry and inform UNOS and the board that she lied and shouldn’t receive the liver – despite the fact that Meredith has spent 20 years using the system to do what is right. She’s performed free surgeries whenever necessary, always aiming to heal and assist people.

The event reportedly left Pompeo in such a state that she had an emotional outburst on set. Thankfully, Waithe managed to persuade her that penning the storyline this way was optimal for portraying Meredith’s romantic interest, Dr. Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman). Furthermore, Pompeo articulated that she felt so strongly about the character development because she holds the show in high regard, a sentiment that she believes the producers and writers are well aware of.

Ellen Pompeo Cares Deeply About Grey’s Anatomy

In the end, Meg [Marinis], Debbie, and Shonda all seem to understand that my vocal input regarding the show’s creative aspects stems from a deep love for the production. As I see it, my role is to preserve and uphold Shonda Rhimes’ legacy as effectively as possible. If we ever become complacent, lackadaisical, or stop putting in our best effort, then we’re not truly fulfilling our responsibilities as we should be.

Grey’s Anatomy is streaming on Hulu, with the first 20 seasons also available on Netflix.
