Ellen Pompeo Says Exiting ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ “Would Make No Sense, Emotionally or Financially”

Meredith Grey doesn’t intend to give up her scrubs — at least for a while.

Ellen Pompeo, known for playing Meredith Grey on Grey’s Anatomy since the show first aired in 2005, recently negotiated her contract to appear less frequently due to her desire to spend more time with her family. In her words to El País during a recent interview, “I’m fortunate enough to work sometimes and take breaks when I need to. I have a good balance in my life.

As a devoted fan, I can’t imagine her wanting to quit the show entirely. “That would be illogical, both emotionally and financially,” she shared. Her contract currently secures her an annual income of $20 million. “The show was viewed over a billion times in 2024 alone. Over a billion times. The corporations behind the show and its streaming platform rake in substantial profits from our likenesses, voices, and faces.

She went on to say, “If I were to leave entirely, others would reap the benefits of my labor for two decades, while I’d see none. It just seems illogical to me that everyone else would gain financially from my efforts.

Additionally, Pompeo expressed that the audience’s affection is crucial for her. “The show carries great emotional significance for many. I strive to maintain an appreciative mindset towards it.

Recently, Pompeo confided to The Hollywood Reporter that at first, she was reluctant to take on her series Good American Family. She expressed, “If I was going to embark on something new, it had to be genuinely unique since I’m so identified with Meredith Grey.” However, she eventually agreed when she understood it was a character she could fully immerse herself in – such opportunities don’t present themselves frequently.
