Ellen Pompeo Slams ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Season 21 for Unrealistic Meredith Grey Plot

As the longest-running scripted prime-time series on ABC, this medical drama is currently in its 21st season and has been renewed up until Season 22. Though viewers continue to adore the team at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, lead actress Ellen Pompeo does express minor concerns about her character Meredith Grey’s storyline this season.

In conversation about the long-running show “Grey’s Anatomy”, Ellen Pompeo – who has been a central figure since its debut in 2005 – acknowledged that even with her leading role and executive producer status, she doesn’t always have control over the decisions made for her character Meredith. She explained that sometimes writers prioritize moving a plot along instead of considering what Meredith would do in specific situations. As an example, she pointed to the current storyline in Season 21 where Dr. Evynn Moore (Lena Waithe) is deceiving about her wife’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis to be eligible for a liver transplant. Pompeo stated that Meredith wouldn’t have exposed her, contrary to how the writers portrayed it, due to her past actions.

My issue with that storyline was the portrayal of Meredith Grey I envisioned would have consistently expressed, ‘I’m angry that you deceived me, but let’s find a way to outsmart the system to get you this liver. The system is flawed. It needs fixing.’ However, throughout 20 years, Meredith has gone against the system to do what’s right. She’s performed surgeries for free, whatever it takes, to truly heal and aid people.

Occasionally, it’s simply part of the job as an actor to follow the directions given by writers and creators, even if you don’t agree with their decisions. This appears to be Pompeo’s situation, as she stated that her criticisms stem from a deep love for the show: “I understand that all my vocal criticism about the creative aspects of the show is born out of a sincere concern and affection for it.
