The second season of “The Last of Us” has concluded, yet it only tells half the tale. After delivering an extraordinary television experience, the finale finds Ellie and her group moving towards peril. With Ellie having transgressed against Nora, she now faces a trial to determine if she succumbs further to darkness or strives for redemption by returning to the light.
The events of Season 2 have been gradually building towards a confrontation between Ellie and Abby, following Abby’s brutal killing of Joel which left deep emotional and physical scars on Ellie. By following Ellie’s pursuit of Abby through Seattle, The Last of Us challenges viewers to ponder their allegiances. Does Ellie risk becoming a part of the endless cycle of violence? Is every move she makes in seeking revenge for Joel truly justified? Amidst the conflict between the WLF and Seraphites, these questions are deliberately hard to answer. However, one thing is certain: everything has repercussions, as Ellie discovers at the end of Season 2.
Ellie Shows Her Worst Colors to Jesse
Towards the conclusion of events, Ellie committed an action that strayed furthest from her ethical guidelines. She subjected Nora to both physical and emotional torment in order to obtain information about Abby’s location. This relentless treatment ultimately led to Nora’s death due to her injuries. The aftermath of this incident unfolds in the finale, where Ellie confesses tearfully to Dina about her violent actions. For what appears to be the first time, Dina seems shocked and taken aback by Ellie’s revelation of her use of violence.
As a movie enthusiast, let me share my take on this intriguing scene. The character Ellie isn’t alone in uncovering more about herself; it seems Jesse is doing the same. With Jesse now based in Seattle, he assumes the mantle of leadership to locate Tommy and escape before any further casualties occur, especially for the mother of his child.
Historically, Jesse and Ellie have never seen eye to eye, and even in a heartfelt moment where Jesse shares a personal story about a woman he once loved, they quickly revert back to their usual standoff of self-importance. The tension reaches a boiling point when they arrive at a critical juncture in their journey. Jesse is determined to rescue Tommy, while Ellie is set on pursuing Abby.
What struck me was the moment when Jesse confesses to Ellie that he never voted for Seattle, to which Ellie responds by questioning the collective needs of the community and labeling Jesse as a hypocrite for allowing a Seraphite teenager to perish.
Even though Tommy might be in peril, Ellie pursues Abby. This action may cause some people to abandon Ellie’s quest entirely, as they question her disregard for Tommy’s safety. If she values him so little, then her moral compass seems severely compromised. However, things only spiral downhill from this point onwards. Ellie confronts Mel and Owen at the aquarium regarding Abby’s whereabouts. Unfortunately, the situation escalates fatally when Ellie shoots Owen as he reaches for his weapon, instantly killing him and injuring Mel’s throat. As Mel bleeds profusely, she reveals that she is heavily pregnant, and pleads with Ellie to perform an emergency C-section operation. A terrified Ellie hesitates, unsure of how to proceed, and Mel succumbs to her injuries. It isn’t until this tragic turn of events that Ellie understands she has crossed a line.
The WLF and Seraphites Prepare for a Final Fight
As this unfolds, the WLF, in what they believe to be the decisive moment of the war, employ the storm as cover for an ambush against the Seraphites on their island. This is depicted extensively in the video game “The Last of Us Part II”, where it’s revealed that Isaac intends this attack to eradicate the Seraphites completely. Ellie finds herself unwittingly caught up in these events, as she crashes onto the Seraphite island and narrowly escapes being killed by some of them. However, her life is spared when a horn sounds an alarm in the village.
In a different phrasing: Sergeant Elise, who lost her son to spores, expresses doubts about Isaac’s infatuation with Abby, hinting that he might have feelings for her beyond friendship. Isaac brushes it aside humorously, but reveals that both of them are likely to die tonight in the upcoming battle. If they do, Isaac hopes that Abby will take charge of the WLF, as she’s the only one who can lead its army in the future. However, according to Elise, Abby has abandoned the group. It seems like Season 3 will explore Abby’s reasons for leaving and further develop this conflict within the WLF.
Seattle Day 3 Ends With a Tragedy
In the Season 2 finale, I surprisingly made an appearance after being absent for quite some time. Jesse and Tommy tracked down Ellie at the aquarium, later leading us back to the theater. We sat there, pondering our journey home as Dina recuperated from her injury. Tommy tried his best to console a troubled Ellie, explaining that Mel and Owen willingly accompanied Abby to kill Joel, a choice they made long ago. However, this didn’t ease Ellie’s guilt. The knowledge that Abby was still alive weighed heavily on her, and while she knew she needed to accept it, she wasn’t exactly thrilled about the situation.
By an uncanny coincidence, Abby arrives at the theater just as Ellie and Jesse are heading towards the lobby. However, it turns out to be a fortunate occurrence for Ellie but not so much for Jesse. As they open the door, Abby shoots Jesse in the face, with Tommy subdued and Ellie held at gunpoint. Meanwhile, Jesse’s lifeless body is on the floor. At least he managed to resolve things with Ellie before his untimely end.
The Last of Us Goes Back in Time for Season 3
This is the instance Ellie has long been anticipating, yet it’s not unfolding as she hoped. Ellie informs Abby that she was responsible for Mel and Owen’s deaths, not Tommy, and asks her to spare Tommy. Abby responds sharply, “You squandered the chance I gave you,” before firing at Ellie. The screen fades to black before revealing the aftermath of their standoff, flashing back to a previous moment in time.
In the closing sequence, Manny rouses Abby in a library to discuss meeting Isaac. Stepping out, she reveals the WLF’s headquarters – a thriving stadium converted into a town. The caption on the screen reads “Seattle Day 1” as she contemplatively stands on a balcony. Just like The Last of Us Part II did, this new installment focuses on Abby’s tale during the crucial three days before her encounter with Ellie. This not only gives Abby a more fleshed-out character arc beyond “the woman who killed Joel,” but also potentially introduces Lev and Yara to depict the complexities of the Seraphites. However, how fans will respond to this shift remains The Last of Us’ greatest enigma yet.
You can now stream The Second Season of “The Last of Us” on Max, soon to be known as HBO Max. Development for a third season is currently underway.
