The news breaks just a few days before the world premiere of “A Deeper Love” documentary at Frameline49 in San Francisco on June 26th. This documentary explores Peppermint’s transition, from making history on RuPaul’s Drag Race and Broadway (Head Over Heels) as the first trans woman of color, to using her position to advocate for LGBTQ rights.
This upcoming movie, long in development and showcasing exclusive, unseen footage, is set to disclose events unfolding behind the scenes when she found herself at a critical juncture – deciding between earning a living through nightly performances or sex work while financing her transition, or taking the chance to compete on Drag Race. This choice ultimately reshaped her career trajectory. Famous personalities featured in this film include Laverne Cox, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Sasha Velour, Shea Couleé, Trace Lysette, and Sherry Vine.
Beyond Page and Pageboy, Bob the Drag Queen and his production company, Purse First Studios, have also joined on as executive producers for this project. Pe’er took on roles as writer, director, and producer, working alongside a team that includes Marc Smolowitz as a producer and Peppermint serving as an exec producer. The film will be jointly presented by Llama Studio, 13th Gen, Pageboy Productions, and Purse First Studios.
Regarding why Page became part of this project, the actor and producer admired Peppermint’s journey as “strong, compelling, and strikingly human.” Page expressed: “Her talent, bravery, and activism have reshaped the performing landscape for trans artists and motivated countless others. This documentary encapsulates her story in a manner that is both personal and universally relatable. We at Pageboy are privileged to contribute to sharing her tale with audiences worldwide.
Speaking about my passion project, Peppermint shared, “It’s been nearly a decade in the making, but I’m overjoyed to finally unveil it to everyone. The topic of trans issues is currently relevant, yet our full human experience is frequently overlooked in discussions. This film aspires to bring something fresh — something authentic and intimate. Collaborating with Pageboy Productions and having Elliot Page sign on as an executive producer before our world premiere at Frameline49 has long been a cherished dream.
Page and Pageboy are represented by United Talent Agency (UTA), Vie Entertainment, Yorn Levine, and ID-PR. Meanwhile, Peppermint is represented by PEG and Buchwald. Lastly, Bob the Drag Queen is represented by PEG and United Talent Agency as well.
Frameline49 runs June 18-28. The full lineup can be found here.
