As a seasoned gamer who has navigated countless virtual worlds and political landscapes, I find myself deeply intrigued by this real-life drama unfolding between Elon Musk and the Italian President Sergio Mattarella. It’s like watching a high-stakes game of chess, where each move is laden with consequences far beyond the board.
The president of Italy has told Elon Musk to get lost.
On Wednesday, President Sergio Mattarella of Italy visibly expressed his displeasure following Elon Musk’s direct involvement in a contentious domestic discussion revolving around the migrant policies of Italy’s far-right administration.
On Monday, Elon Musk criticized Italian judges for questioning Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s proposal to invest approximately $850 million to transport migrants from Italy to newly constructed detention facilities in nearby Albania. Musk voiced his opinion, saying “These judges should step down” on platform X.
Musks’ intervention felt akin to adding more pain to an already sensitive situation, as Italian right-wing politicians have been criticizing judges as well.
In a rare display of strong words, President Mattarella, a 83-year-old respected figure in Italy, delivered an unusually stern reprimand towards Elon Musk. Although he didn’t explicitly mention Musk, his statement on Wednesday made it clear who he was addressing. President Mattarella emphasized the importance of upholding Italy’s sovereignty, particularly when speaking about future U.S. government officials.
Mattarella stated that Italy is a strong democratic nation capable of self-governance. He added that anyone, especially if they are set to assume a significant role in another nation’s government, should respect that country’s sovereignty and refrain from dictating orders.
Mattarella spoke about the news that Donald Trump, the incoming U.S. President, has appointed Elon Musk as a joint leader for what’s being called the “Department of Government Streamlining” or DOGS, with the goal of implementing significant reforms within the federal administration.
There was no immediate comment from Musk on X, but just as Mattarella’s statement landed, he returned to the migration issue, writing: “Do the people of Italy live in a democracy or does an unelected autocracy make the decisions?” This risposte from Musk only increased the anger and resentment at the tech billionaire among ordinary Italians.
In early December, Italy’s highest court will examine the legality of a judge’s decision. However, the ultimate decision may rest with the European Court of Justice (ECJ). On Wednesday, an ECJ representative stated that it might take several months for the Luxembourg-based court to provide clarity on the issue.
Despite criticism from opposition politicians who view Elon Musk’s involvement in Italian domestic politics as unwarranted and inappropriate, particularly his suggestion to dismiss members of the Italian judiciary, Matteo Salvini, a prominent supporter of Trump and Italy’s anti-immigration Deputy Premier, has voiced his agreement with Musk. The center-left Democratic party deemed Salvini’s comment as an unacceptable intrusion into Italian matters.
Ernesto Carbone, a member of the Supreme Judicial Council, criticized Elon Musk for being among those seeking to become “powerful elite” with ambitions to influence global politics, posing a threat to democratic institutions.
The Italian National Magistrates’ Association also criticized the billionaire’s involvement. In the words of the association’s vice-president, Alessandra Maddalena, “The issue at hand is not just the autonomy of the judiciary, but the sovereignty of the Italian nation.
Carlo Calenda, a conservative political figure, commended President Mattarella’s critique of Elon Musk, stating that such action was crucial to “maintain the honor and respect of our nation.” Calenda has voiced worries that American democracy under Trump might transform into what he referred to as “a system dominated by a few powerful individuals.
Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s Prime Minister and head of the Brothers of Italy party, has put herself in a somewhat awkward situation. She had boasted about being friends with Elon Musk and even shared pictures of them together on Italian social media platforms. Recently, Meloni and Musk were seen exchanging warm smiles at an Atlantic Council gala dinner in New York City, where Musk presented Meloni with the Global Citizen Award.
Many Italians think that Meloni’s supposed friendship with Musk could potentially safeguard Italy from potential fresh tariffs that the incoming U.S. President, Trump, might impose on Europe.
In recent days, Meloni has been relatively quiet; many assume she aligns with Musk, yet she cannot dismiss members of the judiciary. However, following Italy’s President’s rebuke to Musk on Wednesday, Meloni issued a brief statement. “We always listen attentively to the words of the president of the Republic,” Meloni stated. She did not explicitly express agreement with Mattarella in her response.
Last week, Elon Musk sparked a wave of criticism in Germany when he called Chancellor Olaf Scholz a “fool” following the breakdown of his three-party coalition. In response to a post about Scholz’s government collapsing, Musk wrote in German: “Olaf is a fool,” which translates to: “Olaf ist ein Narr.
