‘Emilia Pérez’ Sets All-Time Oscar Record for a Non-English Language Film With 13 Nods

Emilia Pérez is continuing to break records this awards season.

On Thursday afternoon, the rapid succession of 2025 Oscar nominations was announced at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater by presenters Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott. Notably, Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical film emerged victorious yet again.

The Netflix movie received 13 Oscar nominations, among them nods for Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), Best Director (Audiard), Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña), Adapted Screenplay, Original Music Score, Makeup and Hairstyling, Cinematography, and Best Picture. Additionally, it secured a nomination for France as the Best International Feature Film, making Emilia Pérez the most-nominated non-English language film at the Oscars.

Gascón, the pioneering trans actress who made history as the first to be nominated for an Oscar and graced the cover of The Hollywood Reporter, is competing against Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance) and Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here) in her category. With her recent Golden Globes win under her belt, Gascón appears to have a positive outlook for the upcoming Oscar ceremony.

Although Demi Moore received the Best Actress award at the Globes for “The Substance”, Gascón expressed mixed feelings backstage: “I’m thrilled about this achievement, reaching this milestone. However, it’s somewhat bittersweet because it seems incomplete. Yet, I couldn’t be happier for Demi, as she had been in my position during Cannes. She watched me accept the award, and I believe we are now evenly matched. Now, we need to break this tie.

The winners will be unveiled at the Academy Awards‘ ceremony on Sunday, March 3.
